Challenge: [085] Alive
Title: Muscle and Sinew
Word count: 258
Spoilers: Inferred for KH2 and The Nightmare Before Christmas
Notes: Sora doesn't get it- Dr. Finkelstein attempts to explain.
"...I don't get it."
Dr. Finkelstein sighed and rested his enormous cranium on his tiny hand.
"I'm sorry. I'm trying, really I am-"
"My boy," the scientist said, fixing his beady eyes on the foreign vampire, "he is a skeleton. As such- our Pumpkin King is dead."
"But he walks and talks and thinks."
"Yes."
"So that means he's alive, doesn't it?"
"In a fashion- yes."
Sora banged his head against his hands- laying on the laboratory's kitchen table. "I don't get it! He doesn't have a heart- right?"
Patiently, the doctor continued to answer Sora's questions. "As he is a skeleton, he is air and bones, yes."
"But hearts are supposed to hold memory, and Jack has memories."
"That is correct."
"But how can he have memories if he doesn't have a heart?"
The doctor sat in his chair and looked thoughtfully at Sora for a while.
"My boy... I have decades of research, countless experiments, shelves of documents on life and bringing things to life. I made Sally and my lovely Mrs. Finkelstein-"
Said Mrs. Finkelstein looked up from her cauldron of Wormwart soup and batted her eyelashes, smiling pleasantly at them.
"-Sally's heart is red velvet stuffed with raven feathers and stitched with iron thread- my love's heart was donated by a loving housewife who didn't need it anymore. Their hearts aren't the same as yours or mine- neither is Jack Skellington's."
"So-"
"So not every living thing is made of muscle and sinew. ...Do you really think that's all there is to your heart?"
