Challenge: [089] No Good Deed (Goes Unpunished)
Title: And, Well
Word Count: 546
Warning: One swear. Virgin eyes beware.
Notes: Backstory spoilers, I suppose. Takes place mid KHI though. And no angst, yay!

He only really thinks of it now, years after the fact, as he stands before the almost finished doorway into the heart of all worlds. A seven parted door that is missing one last princess to make it whole and accessible. And the heartless are running everywhere unreigned and that silly child Riku is whining over his poor friends loudly in the back of his mind.

And, well, he remembers her. A relative of some sort to Ansem; a cousin, a niece, maybe not even blood related. She was the only one that knew what lay beneath the upper floors of ballrooms, libraries and spender. When he first arrived in the city carrying strange wounds, fever and no memory to speak of, she was there too. He remembers her peeking around the doorframe while he lay in bed, and her hiding cookies underneath his pillow ‘for later, cause nurse won’t let sick people have them’.

He remembers, in those days, spending his mornings in the laboratory below and his afternoons sulking elsewhere trying to forget Ansem’s angry response to their findings. And, well, she must have hated when people yelled too, because she hid also. Under furniture mostly. Stealing ink bottles from the library and drawing cheerful pictures and practicing her messy printing on the underside of tables. He remembers catching her writing nursery rhymes under his bed. And the sound of her laughter as he kneeled down, pulling dust and tangled sheets and six year old girl out, is right there in his mind.

He doesn’t remember who suggested they move from animals to humans to study the heart. He does remember the table he allowed himself to be strapped to. The hum of machinery and blinding overhead lights are permanently etched into the rhythm of his heartbeat. He remembers not being enough. He remembers the call for different subjects. One’s with stronger hearts.

He remembers looking at her. And... well... Not her, he remembers thinking. Not her.

He took her at nightfall. The town was mostly landlocked so they had to walk for hours. He had to carry her by the end of it, her legs limply around his waist and her face pressed to his neck. He knows some magic, even in those days, despite what Ansem tried to keep from him. Enough to secure her passage over world and ocean. Enough that she would sleep and remain asleep until she hit land and freedom and something better.

And, well, it’s not that he forgot about her so much as he just... didn’t recall. And now, of course, he remembers everything.

Tilting his head, gazing at the perfect doorway to everything he wants, he eyes the gaping hole where a little girl’s heart would fit so beautifully. A little girl that wouldn’t have been hard to find at all, not at all, if someone hadn’t decided to send her away to an island. An island where she would meet the one person who could successfully wield a weapon of legend against him. If some spectacular idiot hadn't gotten all soft and bewitched by a child and made a choice so awesome in its consequences that he is now standing right here with a very not complete doorway.

And... and... and... Well.

“Well, fuck.”

I love you. ^_______^

I love your tone in this -- it's wonderfully pensive and a touch self-mocking and a little funny and yay.

Excellent work, as usual. :3

I nod appreciatively. And thank you for the warning, so I could prepare my virgin eyes for the swear at the end.

That was a fantastic thought. Kairi, a friend/cousin/sister/whatever of Xehanort.

Spectacular. Absolutely amazing.

Braver? Hardly.

I've been sick for a solid week, during which we had a blizzard, so I had absolutely nothing to do. Except beat KH2 (one of the first non-gameboy video games I have ever finished in my *life*.)

After which I craved Fanfics. I'm just starting to get scared of FF.net, which has...well, an abundance of terrible stories, with a smidgeon of excellence hidden in between. (It's where most of us get our start, so I guess that's okay.) I noticed that people put considerably more thought into their writing when they're A) being judged on it or are entering it in some sort of contest, or B) under the threat of getting their fic deleted because it's just that awful (the subliminal message behind mods.) :)

It's a real comfort to know that, somewhere, there is a higher concentration of good fanfiction (like yours, especially). Especially when I'm not insanely busy.
