Title: Faith, Trust, and Pixie Dust
Word Count: 386
Spoilers: For CoM and the general premise of KH.
Notes: Both Sora and Riku would be good for this challenge, but I decided to go in a different direction. This was supposed to be fairly cheerful, I'm not sure how the traces of angst crept in.
Rating: G
It was the solid weight of wet dog knocking him down and the exasperated beloved voice of his wife scolding him for smearing mud all over the royal upholstery.
It was him falling asleep while reading dusty manuscripts and waking up to find that someone had tucked a blanket over his shoulders and placed a mug of steaming hot cocoa on his desk.
It was the note he had left behind, cryptic and unsatisfactory and full of apologies. But a promise nonetheless, one he intends to keep.
It was stolen steamboats and chipmunk engineers, dancing broomsticks and fanciful topiaries, singing flowers and good fairies. Sunny afternoons and butterflies resting on his nose and six hundred thousand impossible things he believed in before breakfast each day.
It was two friends, loyal as can be. One brighter than he looked and the other not as clever as he pretended. Both can make him smile and he misses their silly funny faces.
It was because he’s not as brave as he should be and warding off all-encompassing doom is such a very big job for a small mouse. But he's got to try anyways.
It was the stars blinking out one by one and the reason he’s stopped mapping constellations in the night sky. It was doors and keyholes and giant keys that grow heavier with each swing.
It was heartless bodies and bodiless hearts and nobodies who want to become somebodies and people misunderstanding the meaning of having hearts. He wants to close his eyes and not have to call anybody good or evil.
It was the length and breadth and width of multiple worlds that folded into one another. It was each wonder he saw and didn’t want gone. Winged horses and flying pirate ships. Mermaids and grinning skeletons. Fields of snow and the spring rain falling on the savannah.
It was the bent shoulders of a boy who needed a smile and a helping hand, because fifteen was too young to believe you can’t be saved. It was stories of a sun-kissed island; wooden swords and fruit shaped like stars.
It’s his feet on the road (light, dark, or otherwise) and the song in his heart and a place where Mickey can finally rest someday. Not today, but perhaps tomorrow.
It’s something to keep believing in.

Date: 2007-05-12 10:03 am (UTC)I was going to go back and edit out the angst, but I figured... well, Mickey's the eternal optimist but he's also mature enough to not see it as a grand adventure. He's also been at it longer than Sora and that's got to be tiring.

Loved this drabble. Great perspective not commonly seen, and very well handled at that. The tone fit the character very well. :)

Date: 2007-05-12 10:20 am (UTC)Really glad you enjoyed the drabble. I used to be indifferent towards Mickey, but CoM made me adore him and his friendship with Riku. He was surprisingly easy to write. :)

Date: 2007-05-18 02:05 pm (UTC)Home is indefinable because it can be found in so many small things.
Definitely. I think KH's concept of home is actually more about feelings/connections between people and the memories they associate with certain places rather than the places themselves. We don't get a lot of info about Disney Castle, so I went with the idea that Mickey sees the entirety of Kingdom Hearts as his home. Not a dominion for him to rule over, but a place to protect and cherish.

Great throwing Riku in there too. The angst strangely fits very well.
