challenge post

Challenge: 145 Temptation
Title: Resolve
Word Count: 600
Spoilers: Slight for KH2
Rating/Warnings: PG, none
Notes: Axel and Naminé

It would be so easy.

So, so easy to pull a little harder on this chain, that chain, add a link, remove one. So easy to slip in through the cracks already made during her work on Sora. She had promised to fix him and she would, she would fix him. She was fixing him, and the first time she dipped a brush into the heart he had forgotten he lost, she felt the chains extending, tied to someone else. She followed them, driven to know where they led, and found-

Riku walking around the rest of the day rubbing absently at his chest. He didn't think to ask her why. She knew, and DiZ stared at her with that one golden eye he left visible and didn't say anything. But he knew.

Easy. Very, very easy, because although she knows Riku wouldn't like to hear it, he's very much like the Replica, and Naminé knew him inside and out, built him up and took him apart. She could do it again.

It would be easy.

"Easy to turn him against the old man- against the Mouse King, and even if they tried to come after us, they're not that strong, are they?" Axel smirked. "So what if we didn't get Sora? He's safe and sound- out of the way- no threat. You could fix the Riku/Ansem/whatever problem easy. That's two of our biggest enemies right there- all your doing, all the credit."

"DiZ would kill you if he knew you were here," she murmured. It wasn't a threat, and she knew that he knew that. It was a warning. Naminé wouldn't have been afraid for herself even if she could have- DiZ wanted Sora. DiZ wanted Roxas back with Sora, and Naminé was the only thing that could ensure that. She had amnesty. Not much- but he wouldn't kill her until she'd finished the job.

Axel's smirk didn't change, but his eyes narrowed. "I'm sure. But if you were gonna shout for help, you would've done it by now. C’mon, Naminé- you don't belong here," he said kindly- and the feeling was a lie, but it was flattering. The only other to use persuasion had been Marluxia and his eyes sneered as he did it- because he was more powerful than she was- and persuaded because he didn't have to. He knew he could hurt her to get what he wanted. Axel didn't have that power.

"Lots of open spaces now that five of the Organization are gone. Neutralize two threats and bring one of our own back. Who knows how high you might end up?"

"Roxas wouldn't be the same," she pointed out.

The less Axel liked something, the more still he became, but he still smiled. "You could keep him from running off all the time. That's worth a little alteration."

"Is it?"

He was smiling at her like he used to smile at Marluxia. Like he was hiding a knife in his sleeve and edging closer as he watched for a place to stab. Naminé didn’t worry. She had resigned herself to oblivion once Sora was restored. If Axel decided to hurry her along the path, her work would be unfinished, and that would be unfortunate, but she didn't care. She considered telling Axel to stop.

"Geez, kid. Don't you want your heart back? I know Marly fed you all that bullshit about warming your hands against Sora's, but you know the Organization's aiming higher. We get Kingdom Hearts and you win too."

Naminé decided to listen a while longer. She lost nothing but her resolve.

Very powerful, you get slammed right into it; tangible temptation right there at the start. XD Brilliant.
