Challenge: [159] In Another Life
Title: One for All for One
Word Count: 580
Summary: In which Roxas is welcomed into a noble brotherhood.

The captain's daughter smiled at him through ocean eyes, holding her arms behind her back. “So, who am I having the pleasure of meeting?”

“Roxas,” he stuttered, noticing how the moonlight made her hair shimmer under her blue bandanna. He caught himself and added awkwardly, “Ma'am.”

She laughed, playing with a loop earring. “No need to call me ma'am. The captain's not really my father. He just sort of... found me one day.”

“Really? Me too. Though, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have found me if it wasn't for this,” he pulled a locket out from under his loose white shirt and opened it with a click. On the inside of one side was a compass. “With all the ruckus it was causing in my town.”

“Can I see?” she asked politely. He nodded, removed the chain from around his neck and let it fall into her open palm. “Why would a compass cause a ruckus?”

“I don't know,” Roxas shrugged, walking from the main mast where they were standing to the starboard railing. He looked out to sea, let the briny breeze rustle his hair. “But the picture in there...”

Naminé joined him at the railing, looking at the faded photograph in the other side of the locket. “The boy looks just like you. Is he your brother?”

“Twin, yeah. We were separated when our parents died. I've been trying to find him since.”

“I'm sorry,” she said softly.

He shook his head. “Don't be.”

“And there were men chasing you for this?” she slipped it back into his hand gently.

He nodded. “But I never found out why.”

They both jumped as they heard something land softly on the deck behind them. They looked at one another first, and Roxas saw Naminé inhale, steel her eyes. She must've learned it from her father because she turned to the dark figure standing behind them with a set jaw and clenched fists.

“I'd be willing to answer that question for you lad,” the man said, his eyes hidden under the rim of his tricorne. “But first, I'd like to talk to your captain.”

“What? Not even going to pull the parlay card?” Naminé asked, taking half a step forward bravely. Roxas unsheathed his twin swords, hoping he wouldn't need to use them.

As though reading his mind, the man smirked under his hat and said, “Actually, I was hoping I wouldn't have to...” At this, a man with an eye-patch dropped down easily from the crow's nest with a thud, carrying the look-out under his arm like a brown-paper package.

“Now, are you going to be a good little pigeon, and fetch your daddy? Or will we have to lengthen good ol' Zexion's nap to the-”

He raised his head slightly, and Roxas could see him absorbing the girl's glare with eyes the colour of abysmally deep waters. He smirked. “I see. Run along now.”

She didn't move, carefully evaluating the man with eye-patch. Once she saw he wasn't going to attack her, she ran into the depths of the ship.

The man folded his arms behind his back and looked the cabin boy from head to toe. “I see my old friend Captain Luxord has a new recruit. Good for him.”

“Who...?”

“I also see he hasn't mentioned me. Luxord always was a bit of a coward when it came to his past,” the man grinned a 'I-can-break-bones' kind of smile. “Captain Xaldin. Scourge of the Skies and Seas.”

~~~
I didn't mean to enter this challenge twice. But goddamn Xaldin jumped me in an alleyway.
