Axel can’t recall how, or when, he became a Nobody. He isn’t entirely convinced of their true motives. The only certain thing is he doesn’t want to become a Dusk.
Superior tells him to unite with Organization XIII; there is no question.

The day Zexion points out their comradeship, Axel is relieved that someone can put a label to what he could not. He’s never had a best friend before- that he can remember.
No one enlightens him on "best friends" decorum; when he kisses Roxas there is no refusal.
----------
They have the same eyes, but Sora doesn’t grace him with the same look. This boy will be the downfall of them all, of them both, but Axel still has to plug the trickle of gratitude leaking from within. Without Sora, there is no Roxas. Without Sora, there is no anything.
Instead Axel bows his head to Superior; he is instructed to give no quarter.

Castle Oblivion is in reality a House of Cards. Axel becomes so counterfeit that even he isn’t sure of the real him any longer.
This is acceptable; there is no real him.
----------
Sora is a prisoner of his own mind, but he is safe. Roxas is a slave to his fate, but he exists. Axel thinks this is insane. This is insane and he’s waiting to exhale.
Time will help him breathe; Axel is given no guarantees.

He doesn’t care why Roxas has the keyblades. He doesn’t have the luxury of wondering about right or wrong- good or evil. Axel has come to genuinely care about one thing only, but Roxas still walks away.
Roxas leaves him undone, anxious, livid; there are no goodbyes.

Bring him back, he is told. Twilight Town is too docile, too easy, and Axel feels an unwarranted stab of resentment for the life Roxas has been given. They won’t keep Roxas here.
His grin is bordering lunacy; here Axel has no control.

Roxas doesn’t recognize him. Roxas can't remember any of it and he doesn’t recognize him.
Axel cannot feel his heart splintering; he has no heart.
----------
They are mere shells. Everyone tells him Nobodies play at having emotions. He, himself, is perhaps the grandest actor of them all.
Yet every attempt at hatred for Roxas falls short; he has no malice.
----------
The first strike drawn from the dueling keyblades makes Axel laugh. On the second blow, it isn’t funny anymore.
Roxas looks repentant; Axel hears no apology.
----------
In Roxas’ next life they meet again.
Sora will never be what Axel knew, and Axel can never be whom Sora needs. But Sora watches him through those familiar, angry eyes, and Axel finds there are things that can make him feel even more hollow inside.
Axel becomes more unbalanced in that moment than in any prior.
Sora is destined to be the downfall of everything- has already destroyed more than he or Roxas knows. Axel speaks many words, but he doesn’t tell Sora. He doesn’t tell Roxas.
The being known as Axel lacks. He is incomplete.
Too late he realizes it has little to do with being Nobody.
