Challenge 104: Wonderland

Challenge: [104] Wonderland
Title: Aethereal
Word Count: 264
Notes: First time posting - I've been lurking for quite a while though. You all write beautiful fics! :)

They know all about it in Pan's world. Neverland is always with you, but it's only in the last few minutes before you fall asleep that it becomes real. And what is Neverland to a Nobody, someone who never was?

There's a place that looks like a small castle - he knows that he stood in the courtyard once, surrounded by other children. There's a photo of two men kissing, tongues just visible where their mouths meet, and he remembers being shocked when he first saw it. There's a dead dog in an alleyway, maggots crawling. He's looking in the mirror and there are bruises on his face, a smear of blood from a cut under his eye.

There's a girl, the same one over and over. She's tiny, maybe five years old, and wears a long braid and has sad blue eyes. She's thirteen (her birthday) and laughing, pale hair cut short, and in those clothes she could pass for a boy. She's younger again and so mad she's crying and it's all his fault. If he's still too awake she looks a lot like Naminè, or sometimes Larxene. He tries not to think about that - he'd rather that she be real, not some wish fulfillment his brain cooked up. He'd like to have a sister. He'd like to have someone looking for him.

There's one piece of his Neverland that he's sure is real, and he recalls it as seldom as possible: he's being dragged into darkness, and a golden-eyed man asks for his name. He can never remember the answer.

This piece is very...ethereal, really! It's the perfect word XD The images you weave are disturbing and haunting and strangely beautiful; reminds me of an indie film I might see at a festival, laid over some twisted, enchanting music, maybe. The last line is very effective. I only wish I knew who he is!

Oooh, this is lovely! I really like the arrangement of images you've chosen for 'a nobody's neverland'. Not quite horrific, but maybe unsettling, and it works nicely. And this line: he'd rather that she be real, not some wish fulfillment his brain cooked up. He'd like to have a sister, makes my heart wibble. And, yes, endline love.
