Title: The Boy They Forgot
Word Count: 352
Notes: Hello there~! This is my first post and my first attempt at a Kingdom Hearts Drabble. There's spoilers for KHII, but I think everyone's played it by now.
Kairi allows herself to carry her failed math exam in her bag with her everywhere.
The boy whose name she can't remember made her fail it. The night before the actual exam, Kairi was walking home and found herself remembering his presence. She couldn't put her finger on it and allowed the vague memories wash over her as she revisited them.
Who was he? Where did he go?
When did he go?
Kairi couldn't remember.
She called Selphie, who dismissed the existence of the boy as a figment of Kairi's imagination because Selphie didn't remember him at all. Not only that, but she had no interest in the subject due the for mentioned math exam. Kairi asked Tidus and Wakka as they passed by her house on their way to the Island. They were as clueless as Selphie.
Many photo albums later, there was no proof of this boy existing and when Kairi woke up the next morning; still dressed in her high school uniform from the night before, her face was between the pages of the cool, clear plastic of a forgotten scrapbook- she found herself late for school and for the math exam. She hadn't even found time to memorize the equations the night before and when she did sit the exam, once it was over, she knew she failed it.
The teacher was disappointed, Kairi is a top student and never failed. Kairi, too, was disappointed.
After all her efforts, the boy's name was still a mystery.
Since then, Kairi allowed herself to carry the exam in her bag.
Whenever she found herself staring out the window during math class, she sees the Islands and the same mental picture comes to her.
A shadow of a boy whispering to her words of assurance and of a lost tale of a would- be adventure.
"Destiny, Kairi, its destiny . . . "
It is all she can remember him say.
Yes, it's destiny. I will know your name, I will reach you. Even if I have to fail a hundred math exams . . .
