----------------------------

Riku knew he shouldn’t get involved.

At first, he only kept an eye out to make sure the Organization hadn’t found out where they’d hidden Roxas. When the first rumours started, – havoc caused by skulking Nobodies - it was as good an excuse as any to keep a closer watch on the person whom Sora would need to be complete.

And what he observed of the other boy intrigued him. This person goofing around in virtual Twilight Town was like the flip side personality of the fierce guy he’d fought in TWTNW. Riku knew Sora’s memories where returning, because his own became less fuzzy. But to watch Roxas’ growing confusion, uncertainty and – dare he say it – sensitivity as his heart reconnected bit by bit with Sora’s was…bizarre.

Riku had made a conscious decision not to get involved.

Really, relieving Roxas of some of his treasured knick-knacks was only done to provide Sora with some clues once he awoke. DiZ may think he had the game in the bag - set and match - but Riku had an agenda of his own. And Roxas’ time was running out.

Riku didn’t get involved. Not really.

It was but a passing comment, as he leaned against the wall of a back alley near the gang’s usual spot. It was as Hayner, Pence and Olette passed him by without notice, – corrupting data streams did have its use – Roxas following not far behind looking quite lost, that Riku made a comment.

“I think I like you better with this personality.” He grinned under his hood as Roxas took a defensive stance, scrutinizing him. “Makes such a refreshing change from the gloomy ‘I don’t care’-attitude.”

His pretty much clueless opponent was not amused. “Stop playing games with me! Who are you anyway?”

Riku laughed, he just couldn’t help himself, before his serious nature got the upper hand again. “Let’s just say I’m someone from the dark.”

Roxas blinked. Now that he paid attention, he realized he’d heard that voice before. It couldn’t be! “But,” he backed up a step before taking a stand, Keyblade appearing and at the ready, “I beat you.”

He shrugged and spoke, as he had for a while, in Ansem’s more suave tones. “Technically, that was Sora, not you.”

Before the kid could so much as blink, let alone charge, Riku opened a portal and disappeared. It wouldn’t do to fight Roxas now. DiZ would be annoyed enough as it was, if he ever found out.

Riku did not get involved further.

Not until many nights and days had passed and momentous battles were fought and won. It was as the three of them - he, Sora and Kairi – lay on their beach, stargazing, that Riku couldn’t resist asking.

“So how did Roxas take to meeting you?”

Wondering what had prompted such a question Sora shrugged. “Well, we fought.” He looked self-conscious about it, despite having obviously come out victorious. If he hadn’t, there would have been severe consequences.

Sora laughed suddenly. “He had me confused at first.”

Riku smiled at that, it didn’t take much to confuse a goofball like Sora after all. “How so?”

“I asked him who he was. He said, ‘Someone from the dark.’ Cryptic, no?”

For the remainder of the night Riku pondered the enigma that was Roxas.
