Challenge [266]

Title: Island Home
Challenge: 266- Going Back
Word Count: 600
Spoilers: None

“We’re home!” Kairi had shouted joyfully upon stepping out of the portal, before realising that Sora and Riku hadn’t yet followed her.

Home, Naminé had murmured in her mind, tasting the unfamiliar word and deciding she liked it. Our home.

“We’re home,” Sora had whispered reverently when he first stepped out onto the white sands again.

Where we belong? Xion had questioned, because she belonged wherever Sora did, and she felt his love for the island.

Yes, Roxas had answered in lieu of his Other, a home where we belong. Although… he had belonged in his other two lives- even if one of them was a lie- hadn’t he?

“We’re home,” Riku had agreed with his friend, grinning broadly as he spotted Kairi racing towards them with outstretched arms.

“You’re home!” Selphie had shrieked, as she ran towards them at Kairi’s heels, and only Kairi heard her next muttered words, “and so you really do exist after all.”

For as hard as they had fought to make it back here, to this island—their island, really, their home—life seemed so much duller now. They had spent so long running and fighting great battles and securing the fate and safety of innumerable worlds, both ones they had been to and ones whose existence they knew nothing of. And now…

Things were back to normal- everyday, commonplace, mundane, and for a while, oh so wonderful. They could sleep easily in their beds, safe in the knowledge that they probably wouldn't be devoured by anything while they dreamed. They played with friends they hadn’t seen in so long (and who were just coming to terms with the fact that oh, Kairi wasn’t just a nutcase when she talked about that other boy), sprawled out on soft sand to watch the sunset, and then raced each other home. There was no worry of attack, no concern that there would be a fight for their lives, and no fears of what might befall them or where their next meal was coming from or if the others were safe. That suited them for a while- a long while, yes, but not that long of a while.

For the three children who had dreamed of adventure had gotten a taste of it- plenty of tastes of it, really (bitter coppery blood, sickly sweet Potions, sour makeshift rations, the spicy aftertaste of a Fire spell gone wrong)- and it had changed them forever. All three had grown, in different ways.

Kairi was no longer content to just sit back and let the boys have all the fun. Just because she was a Princess didn’t mean she had to depend on her loyal Knights to rescue her.

Sora had lost much of his former optimism and innocence. He’d seen too many things on his journeys to ever believe the world was as right as he’d once thought it was. Fighting for his life on a daily basis had done that to him.

Riku had seen so many things that now he knew were out there and didn’t want to leave alone. His competitive streak had lessened along with his natural arrogance, but the urge to leave, to explore had never left him.

Sora’s mother had waited for what seemed like forever for her son, and she’d gotten to keep him for a time. But she supposed that it didn’t really come as much of a shock when her son appeared in her doorway late one night and said, “Good-bye.”

She watched through the window as three mismatched shapes piled into a gummi ship and took off into the sky.
