Challenge: [065] Games
Title: Riddle Me This
Word Count: 502 (eep)
Notes: The Cheshire Cat prepares Sora et al for an audience with the Queen of Hearts. No spoilers.

"Oh, I imagine she'll make you play a game with her. The Queen does like her games," the cat murmured, ever grinning.

"What sort of game?" Sora asked, not worried; he was good at games. The cat's smile widened, threatening to overtake its entire face.

"I would say... a game for you."

"For us?"

"No, a game for you."

"Me?"

"Dear me, no."

"That... doesn't make sense."

"Yes it does. A game for you, but not for me. A game of yellow, but not of red or blue. You know, a game of old but not new? A game of short but not small." The cat blinked at them expectantly. At their silence his tail began to fade.

"Is-is this a real game?" Sora asked quietly to his companions.

"Of course it is!" the grin cried, indignantly. "Haven't you caught on yet? A game of spots but not speckles. A game for lovers but not friends. A game of flower but not plant. Give it a try."

"A game of dark but not light?" Sora hazarded.

"Can't say it is. Though it is a game of moon but not sun. Come now, the game is straightforward, but not simple." Its legs had vanished.

"This game is impossible!" Donald muttered, foot tapping.

"Yes, it certainly is. But not difficult. Play along, play along. A game of hold but not grasp."

"Of sound but not noise?" Sora guessed.

"It's a game of sound and noise, but not for ears." Only the cat's head and ever growing smile remained.

"Oh, it's a game of words, but not meaning," Goofy said, thoughtfully.

"My, how true!" it cried in glee, hands re-appearing to offer applause. "A game for my tooth, but not for my teeth."

"I'm not playing this!" Donald blustered, normally white feathers taking on a rather red tinge.

"But you must! It's a game for four, not three!"

"It ain't a game for ducks though..." Goofy said mildly, then grinned himself. "But it is a game for Donalds!"

"I knew you had it," the cat beamed, his upper body dutifully staying visible. "What about you?" it asked, casting its stare towards Sora.

"Uh... well... Riku always solved these kinda games."

"This game won't work with Riku, I'm afraid. Give me a guess!"

"Er... a game of... feel but not touch?" The cat chuckled wickedly and its hands disappeared again.

"Close."

"Umm. A game of this but not that?" It tsked, and only its crescent smile remained.

"Goofy... I don't get it," Sora said, trying to ignore Donald's angry stomping about.

"Gawrsh, it's really simple, Sora. It's a game of once but not twice. Of swords but not keyblades. Of forest but not them trees."

"Forest but not trees?" Sora repeated, slowly, thinking it over.

"No do-overs!" the grin shouted, then faded completely. "Bad form, bad form. Only one chance left..." the disembodied voice taunted.

"This game is stupid!" Donald flustered from across the small clearing.

"Not stupid," Sora said slowly, then grinning. "But it is-"

Hee, do you know an answer? Play along for a cookie. XD
[Hint: if you've never played this game before, you want to look at all the words that the game IS, compared to all the words that the game is NOT. There's something in common with all the words that the game IS, that all the words that are NOT lack. I'll edit in the solution in a few days, but I know some people like to tinker with these on their own, lol.]

EDIT: YOU CAN FIND THE ANSWER AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE

The game is moronic, but not stupid, right? :)

[identity profile] chesari.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yay, cookie! :D And it is a game of cookies, but not pastries.

[identity profile] chesari.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's a fun game! Well, okay, technically it ISN'T a fun game, but it is enjoyable...:)

Funny that I never encountered this game before. I love word games.

[identity profile] oldsneakers.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
hey, this drabble was actually very interesting. XD bravo! i liked it a lot. so many pairings drabbles can get kinda overwhelming after a while.

thank you for sharing it :D

[identity profile] oldsneakers.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
haha. XD it seems to do that to a lot of people. i wish i could remember where i got it from!

[identity profile] avalonestel.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
That was amusing! XD I love the Cheshire Cat, and this was expertly written. I'm going to go muse over this now... Great fic, and good luck in the contest!

[identity profile] avalonestel.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
It's not stupid, but it is foolish!

Also, it's a game of touch, but not feel. And a game of good but not best.

[identity profile] avalonestel.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yay, cookies! *munches* That's a lovely game, but not a fun one. ;) I really enjoyed trying to figure it out, and the fic was wonderful. Thanks!

[identity profile] schizo-niko.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Er, um.... *brain is slowly melting*

[identity profile] chesari.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's a game of [livejournal.com profile] schizo_niko! But not of melting brains. ;)

[identity profile] schizo-niko.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Errrg! I have no idea what the game is about. I'm seriously not in the inner circle with this one.

[identity profile] chesari.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
The game is a paradox, because it both is and is not a game of letters.

[identity profile] schizo-niko.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. Well, that makes sense.

(It makes sense but not logic?)

[identity profile] chesari.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Just the opposite. It's logical, but not sensible.

[identity profile] euphonious-glow.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
This is confusing... But I love it. The Cheshire Cat is awesome. Made me grin a little. Good job.

[identity profile] singwithin.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's not stupid, but it is... mad. :D

Anyway, I have no idea how this game works, but I like the idea. And Donald and Goofy's reactions are hilariously in-character. And the Cheshire Cat vanishing throughout.. very nice.

[identity profile] vestimona.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Very clever I must say, although i couldn't think of anything to participate in this game (my brain is totally fried...)

oh well, no cookies for me...

I love the cheshire cat's touch in this!

[identity profile] igivebugshugs.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
It's a game of idiocy... but not stupid? I don't know. +brain fries also+

Nice though. :D It was a fun read.

[identity profile] ruby-shards.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Very lovely drabble. I adore the Cheshire Cat, and Alice in Wonderland in general, and this was very nice and unique. ♥ I love the game used. :D

And even if it took me forever to figure out the game, I mostly certainly agree:

This game is not stupid, but is rather idiotic, if I am correct.

[identity profile] criminalize.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
*sighs* I must be really, really daft. *still does not get it*

Awesome drabble, though. And really, really fun. XD

[identity profile] crimsoncookie.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
not stupid, but it is original...! and also a game for cookies, crimson or no. ;)

[identity profile] jelzie-bean.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
So would this work if you said something like "its a game for pages but not books"?
I really liked this...its fun trying to catch on since i never played it before.

[identity profile] emptybackpack.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like crying now. I know it's early morning, and I haven't yet had tea, but this took me way too long to get. I are stupid. Or rather, stoopid. Ah, bad spelling. But it works. A game for morning, but not late night? A game for coffee, but not tea? A game for Lorin, but not for me? But it sure is a game for Sora, Donald, and Goofy, isn't it? But not for Riku, Kairi, or Mickey. And I must say, it is definitely a game of lobotomy. Or pneumanoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, yes? But not of antidisestablishmentarianism.

[identity profile] inastr8jacket.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, that was FUN TO READ. The characters were written really well.

Hmm, The game is for Sora, but not for Riku. The game is for Roxas, but not for Axel. And the game is not for either Kairi or Namine, but it is for Olette. I'm just guessing but I think I'm right.

[identity profile] squee-doodles.livejournal.com 2006-06-09 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it a game of lefts, but not ups? xD; Tis an awesome fic~ I heart the Chesire Cat, even when he hurts my brain. xD ♥

[identity profile] squee-doodles.livejournal.com 2006-06-10 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Ohhhh. So it's a game for cows, but not bulls?

Heh, it totally is. xD And not a problem! All your fics are awesome; I enjoy reading all of them. x3

(♥ Thanks!)

[identity profile] orchida.livejournal.com 2006-06-12 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, you are such a great writer! Em... it's a game for cookies, but not biscuits, a game you play slow, but not fast! Brain entertainment and drabble love at the same time ;)

[identity profile] syvia.livejournal.com 2006-06-13 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
XD Thank you so much for posting the solution- my brain was hurting!

*applauds you* Clever and well-written as always. ^^ Lots of fun to read (I luffs the Cheshire Cat, I does~).

[identity profile] alexander.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Interesting way to do it :D

[identity profile] avalonestel.livejournal.com 2006-06-16 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Congrats on winning the contest! You totally deserved it! :)
