Rhymes and Wishes

The children sat on the beach in silence as the last of the sunset’s bleeding paint-splashes faded away. Kairi lay down in the sand and stared up at the darkening sky. A few moments later, she thrust her arm upward and pointed.

“Look! The first star of the evening!” she exclaimed. She clasped her hands, closed her eyes, and began to recite the nursery rhyme she had chanted so many times before –

“Starlight, star bright
First star I see tonight,
I wish I may, I wish I might
Have the wish I wish tonight.”

She looked back up at the sky. “I wish that someday I’ll be able to find out where I come from.”

Riku made a sound of annoyance. “I don’t know why you waste your time on that kid stuff.”

Sora glared at Riku indignantly. “What do you think we are? We’re kids!”

Riku shrugged unrepentantly.

Sora, as if in retaliation, bent his head and repeated the rhyme, then said, “I wish that we’ll always be together, no matter what happens.”

“That’s a stupid wish,” Riku said. “We’re gonna grow up and get married and stuff, right?”

Sora stared up as one by one, more stars appeared. “That doesn’t mean we can’t stay friends.”

Then the conversation turned to the subject of that evening’s dinner.

~

Riku wandered determinedly through the darkness, feeling it crawl through his hair, up his sleeves, under his skin, trying to engulf him, to drag him in. As he fought it, desperate, he thought he could see a glimmer of light in the distance. He knew it was only his imagination, that it was utterly impossible for even a pinprick of light to exist in such complete darkness, but at that moment it seemed painfully, heartbreakingly real. It looked just like a star, the first star in a neverending night. He didn’t know if he deserved light anymore, but he wanted it, needed it so badly.

Riku closed his eyes and recited a child’s nursery rhyme that he’d forgotten he remembered.

“Starlight, star bright,
First star I see tonight…”

When he finished the rhyme, he whispered, “I wish I could find my way back to the light.”

Then, unexpectedly, a white-gloved hand took his, pulling him up, away from the darkness.

“Wish granted,” said a laughing voice.

Riku opened his eyes to see King Mickey smiling at him from out of the shadows.

Sora, Riku, and Kairi sat on the beach, watching the sunset, but now they were no longer children. They were somewhere between child and adult, straddling the line between innocence and wisdom. They didn’t know everything, but their journeys had left them knowing more than they had before. They had gained and lost, loved and hated, sinned and been virtuous, and though they were not the way they had been before, they were still whole for the most part, and they were together.

Riku turned his gaze to the sky. “Look! A star,” he said, pointing. He spoke the words of the rhyme once more, and then said in a soft voice, “I wish that no matter where we end up, or what happens, we’ll always be friends.”

Sora and Kairi stared at him in surprise.

“You always said that was kid stuff,” Kairi said, puzzled. “That it was silly.”

Riku smiled at her. “Well, rhymes and wishes never hurt anyone.”

[livejournal.com profile] sicarius66 beat me to it. :(

I love Riku's rhyme. It's so sad, especially in the context of where he was at the time.

King Mickey's got mad timing skills. I like this very much. Fuzzy, but without sacrificing Riku's character.
