Title: Light Remains
Word count: 447
Spoilers: Inferred for KH2
Notes: Pre KH2, spoilers for the entire game. ---- and Naminé just before the KH2 prologue.
He sat in the darkness because it was easier. Shrouded in his appropriated Organization coat and pressed into a corner of the sitting room, he was hiding- and knew it- and didn't care who else knew it.
He'd thought he would be able to change back. He'd thought- he'd accepted the possibility that once he dove that far into the darkness, he might not be able to come back. He'd done it anyway- for Sora.
The mission had been... successful. Guilt still ate at him- accusing blue eyes burned into his memory. Eyes far too much like Sora's (he was not as thankful now that he could remember what Sora's eyes looked like). But Roxas had been installed into the digital Twilight Town. Naminé had already begun her work, and Sora would wake up.
He knew he had to stay at least till then. DiZ had said this place was well hidden, but Roxas had been a precious commodity. The Organization wouldn't let him go that easily.
He would stay to protect them- protect Naminé’s work and Sora's slumber until she was done and then- then...
Where could he go?
People would take one look- see what he had become- but was it any less than he deserved? He'd destroyed the Islands in the first place. Maybe- maybe this was his punishment for the first surrender. The darkness was his own now- he used it in accordance with his will, but-
I look like...
He couldn't tell Sora. Couldn't tell Kairi. He didn't want to do that to them- make them look at him now that- now that he-
I look like him... and I can't change back.
He would protect them. He would. But after that-
He smelled something familiar then- could see the portal open even without light for contrast.
"Hello."
"Naminé." He winced at the deep, soothing, hated sound of his- no, not his, His voice.
"Can I show you something?" she asked, footsteps almost silent in the darkness.
He grunted assent- then heard a sharp sound, caught a whiff of sulfur before-
Light.
Naminé held the fireplace taper lightly between thumb and forefinger, looking at the flame for a moment. Presently she lowered it, lighting a candle on the broken table. She waited until the wick caught flame, then lifted the taper again.
“They’re very small,” she murmured, looking at him. “But Darkness can’t touch them.... It comes close,” she admitted, “as close as it can- but the light remains until...”
She pursed her lips, exhaled, and put out the light.
She put out the light.
He looked at the candle and its tiny, but unwavering, flame.
“Thank you, Naminé.”
“You’re welcome, Riku.”

Riku's a good kid when all is said and done, I think. ^^ He's also rebellious enough that he wouldn't just blindly follow everything DiZ told him to do. I think he'd be the first long-term bit of kindness Namine ever got (DiZ is a little... uh... biased against Nobodies, yes? ;p), and he would have given it to her, because he's a good person, and she deserved it.
^^ I like to write their interaction.
