Prompt: Axel, Zexion, books
Title: Masterpiece
Word Count: 520
Notes: For the lovely [livejournal.com profile] gogo_chan_.

“Any of these yours?”

Zexion did not allow the voice in his ear to distract him from his book; Axel always worked like that, using personal space as a weapon against the unwary. Zexion had no doubt he was intelligent enough to realize how pointless trying to discomfit another Nobody was. Eventually.

“They all belong to the library, Eight. Surely you know that.”

“Of course, of course.” Axel grinned. He circled to the other side of the couch to peer upside down at the title of Zexion’s book. “The Chains of Memory: An Analysis. Aren’t we studious.”

“It is the purpose for which we came here,” pointed out Zexion mildly. “It would do you well to emulate.”

“Nah, I’m more interested in the personal side of things.” Axel watched him thoughtfully for a moment. “This stuff give you any insight into our little witch?”

“Do you come as an emissary from Marluxia, then? He needs to understand some of what we have here if he plans to use her effectively in any case.” Zexion had left off the pretense of reading, now. He followed Axel’s pace with unblinking eyes.

“Me? An emissary? Banish the thought.” Axel flopped onto the couch next to Zexion, disarmingly relaxed. “I’m on nobody’s business but my own, as usual.”

Axel could easily be trying for his own takeover, reflected Zexion. Damage control for two simultaneous betrayals could get annoying.

“What specific information did you want to know?”

“I was wondering…is there any logical explanation for how someone with no memories of her own manipulates those of others?” Axel leaned forward intently. “How does something without a heart provoke feelings?”

“It is rather counterintuitive,” agreed Zexion. “The best theory we have is the simplest: that the bonds still linger from when she was Somebody.”

“Doesn’t work that way for all of us, though.” said Axel softly, eyes looking somewhere Zexion couldn’t see.

“What, has she…” And Zexion suddenly understood who they were truly talking about. “Number Thirteen.” He smiled at Axel’s slight start of surprise. “Vexen hasn’t done any tests on him specifically, at the Superior’s command. It has him most aggrieved. You could confess any abnormal reactions if you desired, though, in the interest of scientific discovery?”

Axel gave him a long look without even the veneer of mimicked sentiment, then grinned again. “Think I’ll pass. You already know too much.”

Zexion made a mental note to watch his back around Axel from now on. “I make it my business to do so,” he replied, and returned to his book.

Axel eyed him for a good ten minutes before poking his shoulder. “Hey, Zexy.”

“Hm? And try not to let your levels of insubordination pass the acceptable norm, please.”

Axel bowed in mock deference. “When I asked before if any of these books were yours…I meant, did you write any.” He waved grandly around the library. “I know you scientific types always want to get published, so. Did Ienzo make it to immortality?”

Zexion tapped his empty chest. “My greatest work,” he said, and smiled when Axel’s surprised bark of laughter echoed in the silent room.

Oh I liiiiiiiiiike it. ^^

I think Axel/Zexion is one of my various favorite Org crack parings. Even when they're not written as a paring, I enjoy seeing their interaction.

*applauds*
