It's sort of a mix of the "Brightness" and "Snow" challenges. Either way, I'm proud of it.

Title: A Bright World
Word Count: 495 (Same as the first one, what the heck?)
Warnings/Notes: Done in 30 minutes or less. The Inspiration Fairy and her silver-plated Wok of Doom practically gave me a concussion.

Sunset; the sky darkening at her back, the subdued sunset before her, it hadn’t been sunny all day.

Diamonds fell around her in slow, drifting swirls. The sky, she was so used to seeing that beautiful azure, spanned from horizon to horizon in a fluffy, lifeless gray. Around her, the sand cast on a mantle of powdery white as the sea churned; it’s waves choppy, muted and sad.

Silence. A cold wind that raked through her pitiful defense of a light jacket, slashing through her hair.

It wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t for the wind, she decided. The cold itself was tolerable if she tucked her hands under her arms and her stockings kept up high. The fuku of her school, the best that Destiny Islands had, was just a short blue plaid skirt and a white dress top. In the short, but brutal, depths of winter, students were alone as far as keeping warm went. Such was the price paid for prestige.

However; the unexpected snow had shut down the academy for the day, leaving most of it attendees home to brave out the weather beside fireplaces and under blankets. Almost everyone was home, keeping warm, except the children.

She quirked her lips into a smile, tucking her head down against another gale of savagely cold wind. The children, the little innocent ones had rushed out into the cold with squeals of delight the second their mothers had relented their grip on them. They had dived, leapt, thrown snowballs and plopped on the ground to wiggle snow angels on the surface of the pristine snow.

“Sora would be right there with them, too.” She could see him, leaping through waist-high drifts of snow, yelling and flinging snowballs as fast as his hands could make them. Riku would be leaning against a tree somewhere, watching Sora’s play and scowling at him for being such a child. Then, Sora would pelt him with a snowball and the façade of mature scorn would melt away and it would be an all-out battle between the two of them.

But that would never happen, they were gone. They would never see the beach blanketed with snow, the snowman Wakka and Tidus had so dearly crafted sitting beside the Paopu tree, as if keeping their place. But, if she tried, she might be able to see it for them, right?

Another strong rush of wind swept in from the sea, breaking her reverie as it tossed snowflakes and chips of ice into her face. She lifted her head up, letting the wind exploit it’s access to her hair, pulling, tugging, letting it whip against her face. She laughed, finding a touch of joy in her new purpose. She would feel the cold, taste the snow, run through the slush, leap into a snowball fight without hesitation; she would do it all, experience it all… for them. She would do it all for them, so that when they came home, she would have stories to tell.

Her laughter lifted up to the sky, mingling with the breeze as it wrapped around the specks of light falling from the sky. In it’s final moments of glory, the sun broke the cloud cover to shine onto the beach.

The world had never been so bright.
