The Meeting That Never Was
Challenge: [157] Double Helix
Title: The Meeting That Never Was
Wordcount: 437
Notes: ... This is because I know nothing about the Double Helix, except the shape. So I don't know if this counts... Feel free to ditch it if it doesn't. 8l Shipping implied, Roxas/Naminé and Sora/Kairi
'Forever, huh?’ Sora chewed at his lip, handling the Paopu fruit with interest.
Kairi nodded, a small giggle barely managing to remain quiet escaped her pursed lips.
‘No way,’ Sora laughed, tossing the fruit back to her, ‘how can a fruit make two people destined forever?’ he questioned, tucking his hands behind his head – a habitual activity Kairi always noticed when he was nervous.
‘I don’t know - but,’ she stumbled through her words, looking away with a small blush of annoyance, ‘Riku - said so. He did’ she added quietly, handling the fruit with care. She looked up with a pout from her forlorn aside, tossing the fruit to Sora, ‘Well, I don’t want to share it with you anyway,’ she called out over her shoulder, stomping down the beach.
Sora then realised how difficult being six really was, dusting off the fruit, fiddling with the broken stem.
‘And we – they… us…’ he faltered, ‘Sora and Kairi – they ate it?’ he asked, hands resting on his knees.
Naminé simply nodded.
‘So… we – they,’ he spluttered again, casting Naminé an odd look.
‘As we are their nobodies… yes, we are joined in the same way – to them, we have no link… yet we do.’
Roxas blinked, ‘What?’ his voice was edged with sarcasm, as if questioning the girl’s mentality.
‘It’s like… a double helix – we make up something much larger than ourselves… yet me and you… we’ll never meet Sora or Kairi… yet our fates will keep us together more than anything else,’
‘Our destinies with those two will always be intertwined, but never destined to meet up,’ Roxas noted, ‘ours never meant to exist at all, theirs never to be interrupted.’
Naminé nodded again, ‘But… I’m sorry Roxas,’ she waved a hand, he too stopped his movements, his expression a mixture of confusion and grief, ‘you’ll understand one day,’ she said, more for her own heart to hear than his. She stood, casting a look over her shoulder before waving a hand again, Roxas dissolving to join the tournament in the town square, or to run with friends... Naminé, to restore the memories of a young man lost in eternal sleep.
