[171] We Three Kings

Challenge: [171] Celebration
Title: We Three Kings
Word Count: 494

The traditional paper lanterns as well as the beautiful, brightly colored kites and streamers were being waved through the air as parade after festive parade wound through the massive courtyard at the base of the Imperial Palace. The Emperor gazed out across his royal city from the tallest tower in this palace; It was the very same balcony he was held hostage in by the infamous Shan Yu. He almost wished he could join in the civilians' bustle during the New Year's festival, and casually walk the streets so beautifully drowned in golds and reds. But he must be a solid, unmovable force for his nation to rest upon, for even the great need someone (or something) to look up to, though people often try to hide their need. "Those in power walk a lonely path." He called out softly, into the breeze that gently lifted his words and dispersed them like snowflakes, or fallen leaves.

The short, fat, jolly little Sultan peered down cheerfully at the public wedding festivities taking place on the streets below. He was perched on a tall, regal-looking throne chair that had been pulled out onto the small balcony over the main street. It was usually used for announcements, but this was a special occasion, and the Sultan needed some fresh air. He dried his eyes (and his sweating forehead) with the oversized white turban. "Aladdin, the heir to my throne and the betrothed to my dear Jasmine! Oh, I couldn't be any happier! Couldn't ask for more!" He sighed happily, and went back inside the grand throne room, in search of some refreshments and a fan.

King Trident gripped his three-pronged sceptre proudly as the dolphin-drawn carriage made its grand entrance into the concert hall. As the trumpets announced his arrival, he gave a powerful swing of his Trident and pointed its three tips to the domed ceiling, as a beam of light shot out and hit the oversized chandelier, creating a myriad rainbows of bubbles and light. The crowd gasped in delight, and cheered wildly. The dolphin pair drew up to the King's seat on a high balcony, and there he sat, watching his old friend Sebastian begin the customary introduction to the annual Music Festival. True, it would not be the same without his youngest and most beautiful daughter, but she did not attend last year, either. He chuckled to himself at the thought. Before, he would have laughed at any fool brave enough to tell the merman king that is daughter would marry a land-dweller. Now, however, this was the reality, and she had gone to be with her beloved, far away. She would return to visit, yes, but meanwhile, he would have to go on with his solitary rule, as he had been for far longer than any before him. The lights dimmed, and the musicians readied themselves. King Trident murmured to himself, high up on his lonely ledge:

"Let the music festival begin."

I like how you've painted these three similar yet very different celebrations, what's going on in each ruler's mind and how that effects how the look upon the party. Great job. ^^

Very nice. I've always been an especially big fan of the emperor from Mulan. Being a king is not only lonely, it's less sexy than being a hero or a villain... nice to get into these characters heads.
