Spoiler Warning: If you don't know who the Enigmatic Man is, this may not make a lot of sense. References events in Final Mix; allusions to events, people, places described in Ura Ansem Reports.
Theory Warning: A bit of speculation on the origin -- and owner -- of the Oblivion ...
Notes: Before battle, a brief moment in Hollow Bastion's empty court; someone has more than one interest in dueling Sora.
It was something remembered dimly -- as if in a fever-dream -- falling half-mad and raving at the ivy gate of the nameless king; lost, adrift, empty as an insect's fragile husk, with aught but a senseless name and the smooth black ice of a chained and blackened crown biting deeply into one bleeding hand.
As if a fragment of an endless night, the bauble mocked him with silent words and the spectre of a life long past, a memory now no more than dust. In his shattered heart's-eye lay a glimmer of midnight wings, of swift sharp adamant to tear hearts and worlds asunder -- but nameless, empty; a purpose forgotten or never known at all.
What blood-stained kingdom's emblem dangled darkly from that chain of endless night? The question plagued him in his fevered sleep, his childlike days; til he locked the hollow thing away, and joined his new companions in the garden of the nameless king.
It faded, then, from the bright hollow of his mind. Slept unheeded til, lured by a false hope and the dark-burning need to know, to understand, the sweet midnight heartsong of the garden drew him down to the world beneath; and he threw the great gate open with a touch – and that gift, that darkling power the sun-eyed king had mistrusted so, brought endless night to the brilliant garden.
Long, so long ago; and now that he is aware -- scored down deeply in this empty shell, this hollow husk -- that he does know that fallen bit of night, should reclaim the void's sweet winged blade --
It has found another master.
Gleaming lightless, the velvet darkness of the crown-in-chains had spread its midnight wings once more ... but in the dawn-pure hands of the child of morning.
Very well; here in this dimmed and shadowed court -- this fallen garden -- he will cut the night's own blade away from the naked heart that stands before him, and reclaim then what was once his own.

This is a very interesting take on Oblivion's origins; I can definitely see it fitting into the game. It certainly makes sense.

Thank ye kind! ^_^ I do have a tentative plan or two for further snippets of Before (as the pre-game situation seems to have named itself in my own mind), and when / if I can get them to cooperate I fully intend to post them.
Finding the right words for the images in my head can be a pain, sometimes .. ;D

Oblivion has always bothered me; it (iirc) is the only Keyblade that isn't an event, just a strange thing you can find abandoned in Hollow Bastion. And it has the crown-emblem. That, combined with the original name for the thing (Memories Past) ...
Well, it makes me wonder.
I can think of two potential candidates for further Keybearers/masters, one from a story point-of-view and one from a metaplot point-of-view. This time I went with the story ...
Hopefully someday we'll know just who Xigbar was referring to :D

Especially so with drabbles where you've got a fairly limited wordcount, I've found. (Amusingly enough-- and this is going to sound ridiculous-- the other day I had trouble choosing a word in English for something I was writing. I knew exactly what the word I wanted was in Japanese, but I couldn't find an English equivalent that felt quite right.)

I do have to wonder why they changed the name so drastically for the English version when all of the other Keyblade names were either exactly the same or very close. I was surprised to find out what Oblivion's original name was when I played the Japanese version of KH2, as before that I had only played KH1 in English. (Now that I have a Japanese copy, however, I should play it again...)
As far as Keyblade Master candidates go, I suspect you and I are both thinking of the same people. I know that my mind at least was screaming, "he was SO a Keyblade Master!" while I was playing...

No, I believe it! *nods* Sometimes there just aren't equivalents ... my usual way around that one involves metaphors, maybe too many of them but it's the only way I can describe what I'm "seeing" .. XD
I do have to wonder why they changed the name so drastically for the English version when all of the other Keyblade names were either exactly the same or very close. I was surprised to find out what Oblivion's original name was when I played the Japanese version of KH2, as before that I had only played KH1 in English. (Now that I have a Japanese copy, however, I should play it again...)
If I had to take a stab at it, I'd guess the tripping-up point is that "oblivion" has a meaning, originally, along the lines of "forgetfulness" ... "the sweet oblivion of dreams" and all that. It's only been relatively recently that the usage in current English has drifted towards making the "ending / dissolution", more negative usage the more prominent one ...
Same situation for Oblivion Castle, I'd wager; the meaning the writing-staff was aiming for just doesn't happen to match the current Western common-usage of the word anymore.
As far as Keyblade Master candidates go, I suspect you and I are both thinking of the same people. I know that my mind at least was screaming, "he was SO a Keyblade Master!" while I was playing...
Well -- aside from yon foundling -- would the gentleman you're thinking of happen to be on the (presumably) youngish side, with clever temprament, unknown ability and an even more obscured fate? (And weapon?) XD

I hope Nomura and co. get around to giving us those "spoilers" eventually. Or maybe they plan to already ... it's insanity but somehow I have suspicions about one of the games announced at E3 XD
