Challenge: [159] In Another Life
Title: Repetitive Natures
Word Count: 499
Summary: Who do you think you'll meet in your next life?
Rating: I suck at this, but, PG-13 I guess? I'm only concerned with it because of some cussing and implied gore.
Notes: I'm partially apalled at what I've done to Axel, here, and partially thrilled. Because I liked the Reverse/Rebirth Org. members. I almost wish I thought I could pull off the implied rest of this. But then it would no longer be a drabble. Um. Also I would probably be creeped out with myself. Moreso than I am now. Gah. XD


His head was splitting. He wasn’t sure where he was - in the brief moment he’d had his eyes open, it maybe looked like a lodge. Not the one he’d been staying at, though. And he hadn’t been there, he’d been... yeah, climbing. Ahead of the tour group, because they were boring. Then the ground started shifting, and he knew not to call it an earthquake,

                                                memories rattling loose in his mind like the earth shaking around his feet; fighting and dying, a dark voice like a wind rushing through him all fuel and direction and why not? if it didn’t matter, and nothing did

light

betrayal in a crackling web that torched everything he almost might have cared about because the whole pattern might’ve held but not the charred remains

                                                                              and he’d called out for help even though he was pretty sure no one could hear him over the noise. Didn’t remember seeing anyone coming before he’d gone under, either.

So. If he expected anyone from the last life to find him, it would’ve been Roxas. Sora. Whatever he was called now. Or maybe Saix, because he remembered the guy holding a grudge like it was a replacement for his heart. But Lexeaus?

Maybe there were worse people to be found by than Saix.

Which was of course when he heard the door opening. He left his eyes closed, and listened as the guy sat down nearby. Pen scratching, low discontented muttering. After a minute, the clink of the pen against a cup? “I’m perfectly aware that you’re awake, Axel. You flinched as I crossed the room.”

He glared, trying to get the room into focus. Darker hair and blue eyes, but it was definitely, “Vexen. The hell I did, bastard.”

Vexen smirked over a cup of something steaming, which gave him a moment of vertigo. Vexen didn’t do hot drinks, right? “It’s Vincent, Axel. And I assure you that you did, you simply... may not be aware of your reactions.”

He winced, shifting on the bed. Couch? He still wasn’t sure, because everything... felt numb. “Shit. You drugged me.”

“You’d be a screaming incoherent mess if I hadn’t. John’s still not managed the finesse he used to have. I’m afraid he broke a few bones.”

“John? John, right, Lexeaus. And my name-”

The little creep interrupted him. “Is inconsequential. Whoever you are now, you clearly remember being Axel. Which makes it surprising that you’re so calm. But, better for the experiment, I suppose.”

Shit, however he’d reacted to that he shouldn’t. ‘Vincent’ was looking more like Vexen every second. “Experiment?”

“When John and - oh, very well, Lexeaus and Zexion?” And he could feel himself struggling to move now, because the bastard’d chuckled when he saw that reaction. “When they return, we’re going to try a little dissection to see if there’s a difference between a reborn Nobody and an ordinary human.”


It wasn’t so much that he thought someone would hear him screaming as that he couldn’t stop.

omg. I'm not even coherent - I don't know what kind of reaction I was expecting, but it's not the one I've gotten. I'm all relieved and pleased and such! :D

It being more than a drabble - one thing is I'm really not certain I could pull off gore, and I don't want to mess it up trying?

The other is that it wants to expand in the other direction too - it wanted to start with the three of them meeting up, and then Axel. Well. *points up*

And then I'm not sure if it was going to go anywhere else. Zexion says yes, but Zexion seems to have come back with a slight megalomaniac streak that refuses to take into account that I might not be able to pull it off. And needs to pick a name, dammit.

I know. I like him in KHII for the most part, and then. I play CoM, or watch the cutscenes at kh-vids, and I remember that I hate him, too. x.x

The being gross? That was what worried me. I've read a few writers who can pull that off and make it somehow interesting, but I don't think I'm one of them. So, better to play it safe. Erm. So to speak.

:3 I encourage you to go for it- but don't post unless you're satisfied with the results. I agree with Cygna down there- this drabble is perfect the length it is. (But I'd love to read a prequel or some kind of follow-up although I'm not really saying to go into detail with the vivisection because for serious horror fic is difficult.)

Vague is good! :D Vague works, because it can be more frightening that way. I- yeah... I'm babbling.

Implied torture like this is so much more powerful than graphic description (for me, at least) - it's both scarier not quite knowing, and I really don't think the most explicit writing can ever hope to truly capture it.

I have such mixed feelings about Axel. It's mostly a matter of who I'm comparing him to--if he's set up with the other KHII characters, I like that side of him, but with the CoM characters (aka my beloved genius babies) I don't like that side of him at all and hope whatever Vexincent is planning hurts. A lot.

What sends me mostly away from the gore route is that, even if I describe what *I* find the most disgusting thing, it won't be someone else's most horrifying thing. If I let readers fill in their own most horrifying thing, it works better for me. (But I vote for more in the backwards direction, because they are my genius babies.)

Sorry I'm late replying to this, I've been a bit distracted and every time I looked at comments, all I could think was 'duh, sleepy'. -.-

So, I have been thinking about this, and I'm going to be working on it? Just, I can be very slow. I will definitely link back if I finish another - writing is a given at this point, I don't think I'm going to be happy with myself if I don't try. ^^;

Yeah, I know what you mean. Sometimes I wonder how it would've played out if Axel hadn't been sent with the rest of them. (And gah, my mind just supplied Xigbar as a replacement. Just. My brain has been supplied with drugs I don't remember taking, apparently. XD )

I am transparent like whoa, am I not? :D For the record, I do love Axel as well. It just gives me much angst. He may be a manipulative, backstabbing bastard, but that kind of makes him interesting (and obviously manipulative is a plus for me >_<), and add in the redemptive qualities and... voila. Doesn't mean he doesn't still deserve everything he has coming to him, though. >3
