Challenge [242]: Pinpoint
Title: Pinpoint
Challenge: [242] Disguise
Word Count: 305
Spoilers: BBS spoilers. Though I still haven't played Aqua's story, so...yeah. Careful on the spoilers for that? XD
Xehanort can still pinpoint the exact moment that Eraqus realised. The days at the castle had grown unbearably long some time ago. Their master was old and weary, dragging his feet towards the inevitable; Yen Sid has long since retreated to his lonely focus on magic. It was mostly just the two of them now, although truth be told they encountered each other only rarely between missions. A snatched conversation here, a meal shared there, and with Xehanort taking on more of the missions to free up Eraqus to look after their ailing teacher, those moments were fewer and further between now than ever before.
He can’t remember now exactly what it was he was talking about- someone or other he’d met, perhaps, or maybe some unusual custom he’d come across in one of the other worlds- because of what happened next. He was somewhere in the middle of a sentence when Eraqus turned from the window and looked at him- really, truly looked at him, perhaps for the first time in years. He stood there and just looked into Xehanort with a question that they both knew without being able to word.
The moment lasted just a minute, maybe two at the most. Xehanort carried on talking around that same grin that’d he’d always worn years before whenever he won their sparring matches and Eraqus carried on staring at him too seriously for either of them to be able to really ignore the unspoken question.
It’s years before the question is asked aloud, when Xehanort is twisted by age and the lines around Eraqus’s eyes and mouth are from something other than laughter. Back then, Eraqus turned away again, made his excuses and left.
The moment was over.
Xehanort’s cover was blown.
Even is neither of them would admit it- at least, not then.

It's lucky I played through some of the later cutscenes in Ven's story the night before posting, or I would've been facepalming around my editing later. XD
