Title: Out Of The Depths
Word Count: 600
Spoilers: ...post-game speculation for BBS?
Notes: To coin a phrase, what is this I don't even? The idea kind of... abruptly happened when I was reading the Wikipedia entry. But... if this isn't the way Nomura chooses to continue the story, I've decided I don't care any more: this is going to be my personal canon for these two.
Riku is holding back. He can't even fake it. Every swing of his Keyblade is halfhearted, and he's covered in bruises-- hasn't even tried to dodge some of the blows aimed at him.
He's afraid. He knows it.
But it's not fear for himself. Not for his safety. He sacrificed everything for his friends before; he'd do it again. No, it's--
It was the sight of Sora and Aqua standing back-to-back, light flaring around them-- blades trailing radiance with each swipe, bright swirls of magic blazing around them and swallowing Heartless into light.
Not just two Masters working together as one, but two people so full of light that no darkness could stand before them.
And he's here in the shadowy forests with Terra, armed with a blade that spews darkness every time he puts his will into it, trying to fight darkness with darkness. Heartless gather around him, crawling and scrabbling, and he kicks at them, feeling cold seep into him where they touch.
He can't shake that vision of light. And it twists the splinter that's deep inside his heart.
Tainted. Dirty. Gave yourself to the darkness, because you were too weak to let yourself be second best. Maybe it's his power, maybe there is something special about him, but no one writes legends about heroes who fight with darkness. Somewhere inside, he's still afraid he's not good enough for the light.
He isn't sure what Terra thinks, but he notices that Terra's not using darkness either, just angry, determined sword-swipes. Riku's trying to follow his lead, but knows he couldn't match Terra in brute strength even if he were giving it his all, and the Heartless are swarming faster, and--
And then, suddenly, there's something emerging from the mass. Something larger than the little Shadows, crouching, tendrils whipping about wildly. Riku leaps towards it, but too late: it's leaping at Terra.
And Terra turns, and sees the tendrils outstretched to grasp him, and--
--suddenly there's an aura of darkness flaring around him, and the Heartless-thing is caught in it, twisting, burning to nothingness as the darkness engulfs it.
And then there's just Terra, standing alone, with his eyes wide and a look of shock on his face. His Keyblade drops to the ground. The sound rattles in Riku's bones.
They stare at each other, unmoving.
Riku is the first to move again.
Terra's down on one knee, staring at his hands like they're covered in blood, an expression Riku knows far too well. And Riku is beside him, eyes shut, half-remembered words falling out of his mouth. Namine's, the King's, even Sora's.
"It's part of you." He feels like a fool, but can't stop speaking. "It's your power to use. You just need to learn to control it. The King-- when he saw me use it-- he stopped thinking darkness was all evil--"
He opens his eyes.
"So... it's okay. It's okay to use it." A pause. A heartbeat. "We can use it. Together."
Terra stares down at the offered hand for a moment. And reaches out, grasps it.
"Yeah." Terra's voice is shaking, but he wants to try.
The ground rumbles. The scent of darkness is suddenly overwhelming-- something greater, more powerful, is crawling out.
Terra holds out his arm, and there's black fire swirling around him, violet dancing with blue. Riku moves closer to him, letting the dark flame seep out of him and join with Terra's, power swirling, flaring, enveloping them both like a protective cloak.
And then they're off, fighting side by side. And there's nothing in Riku's mind any more but the present.
