Challenge: [101] Puppet
Title: Stronger
Characters: Kairi, Saix
Word Count: 340
Spoilers: Uh, it's a good idea to have gotten to The World That Never Was, but it's not horribly spoiler-y.
Notes: Not quite sure how I feel about this one :/ Oh well, I tried. Concrit is enjoyed~





“He begged for you.”

Kairi said nothing, her hair falling over her face and just barely touching her knees.

“He knelt in front of me and begged to see you.”

She pulled her knees closer to her chest and continued to stare at the ground.

“He will do anything we tell him to, just because we have you.”

She flinched and turned her head towards the opposite wall, away from him.

“Even now, he is out there, doing our bidding, bringing us closer to our goal with every step he takes, all in the hopes of saving you.”

She began trembling as Saix walked up to the bars of her cell.

“We control him now, just as we control you.”

She moved faster than he thought she was capable of. He had no time to react before Kairi reached through the bars, grabbed the front of his coat and yanked him towards her. He locked eyes with her and saw an unexpected anger and strength there.

“Sora is stronger than any of you! He’ll find a way to stop you no matter what you do! He’s not your puppet!”

Saix frowned slightly, grabbed her wrist and squeezed, forcing her to let go of his coat. He swiftly pulled her wrist up high above his head, lifting her far off the ground and smashing her painfully against the bars. He caught her chin with his other hand and forced her to look at him. He bent his neck and put his face inches from hers, close enough that he could smell the fear on her breath.

“But you are.”

He let her go all at once and she fell to the ground in a heap. She grabbed her shoulder in pain and breathed heavily. He watched her for a moment before he turned away and disappeared down the hall. She slowly got to her feet, still grasping her shoulder. She blew her hair out from in front of her face and stared in the direction Saix had gone.

“Not for long.”

I was literally holding my breath while I was reading this. Wow, I love it! It's just... Gosh, Saix is so delightfully creepy and evil, and Kairi is amazing. I'm so glad you showed that strong side of her character. And you wrote Saix perfectly. I've actually always wondered what happened while she was in captivity with them. The last line is especially great.

Hah, I was holding my breath too. Just... I always forget I love interactions like these until they're placed right in front of me. The scene where Sora begs is one of the most tragic scenes in the game for me, and I like that you use it as ammunition here, cause that's really what it is. I also really really like how you started the drabble with Kairi being kinda scared and hiding behind her hair, and then when she makes the decision to fight back at the end, she's blowing her hair away. It's a clever little circular framework that works really well. Mm. Love it!

such spot-on characterization for both of them! lovely drabble. :) i like how you wrote kairi, especially- definitely scared but unwilling to back down, readily defensive about sora, sticking up for him, etc. great great job. and saix-kairi (+ sora!) is an interesting interaction to write about, and certainly a unique idea for the puppet theme. it fits so well!
