Aug. 2nd, 2009 11:44 pmChallenge: [195] Chance Meeting
Title: Spirit
Word Count: 540
Notes: Probably kind of... weird. Definitely not like the other things I've written. I don't know where this came from; it just popped into my head when I saw the challenge. Oh, and lots of jadedness.
He looked familiar. It wasn’t like many people his age had silver hair. Its hue was obvious even in the smoky glow emitted from the few cracked Tiffany lamps that brought comfort to the bar‘s patrons. Sora could see no alternative, and after all these years maybe he needed some solace. He drained the last of his drink and approached his friend with anticipation and dread.
“Uh… Riku?”
The man turned around in his barstool, his slightly inebriated eyes meeting Sora’s. At first he stared with confusion, as though so many years apart had stolen the memory of his once-best friend, but as he studied the face of his former comrade, a dawning comprehension lit his face.
“Sora?”
“…yeah.”
Awkward, dumbfounded silence. Sora hated it more than anything.
“So, um… wow, you’re the last person I thought I’d spot in a bar on Radiant Garden,” Riku’s mouth hung open in disbelief. “How long’s it been?”
Sora shrugged, counting back in his head. “Eight years since we defeated Xemnas.”
“So six since you left home,” Riku frowned.
“I’m so sorry…”
Sora couldn’t tell if the smirk on Riku’s face was masking anger or happiness. Then again, maybe it was neither.
“Why’d you leave so suddenly?" It was just like Riku to dig into the question. He was never one for small talk.
“I… I guess I needed adventure again. It’s funny that I was the one who got itchy feet this time. You were happy with college. Kairi was just glad to be back. Speaking of which, how is Kairi?”
“She got married a couple months ago,” Riku’s voice was solemn.
“She what? Who‘d she marry?”
“Nobody you know,” Riku took another sip of his drink. Something mixed with vodka, probably, if his tastes were the same as Sora remembered. “She tried to get a hold of you, but you were off adventuring. How’s that working out for you, anyway? Help solve the mystery of the water main break in Twilight Town? Knit some mosquito nets for those pests in Deep Jungle? Catch a couple street rats in Agrabah? Or are you just happy to drown your sorrows here while you recollect those childhood adventures you can never have again?”
“What about you?” Sora accused. “You’re sitting by yourself in the same place as me. How’d you end up here?”
“I dunno,” Riku admitted. “I guess I can only take normalcy for so long, too. All that adventuring really messed us up, you know? Sometimes I think I’d be happier if I’d never opened my heart to darkness, never knew of all those other worlds, just learned to be content with the ordinary…”
Hypocrite… He kept the thought to himself.
“Content with the ordinary,” Sora laughed cynically, taking the stool next to Riku. “I think I’d rather be a masochistic alcoholic.”
Sora got the bartender’s attention and ordered another drink. If he was going to live in the sad reminiscence of the past, he was going to do it with a friend.
They raised their glasses, clanging them together so harshly that the liquid sloshed out, dribbling down uncaring hands that only yearned for the next swig of spirit.
“To the past?”
“Might as well. We have nothing else to celebrate.”
