Riku’s first dosage of darkness was back in his early childhood era.

Ansem came with an offering of sorts to his five year’s old self. “Want to see something cool?” Ansem asked. With a blurred wave of his hand, several beings came to life from nearby shadows, like a Frankenstein revival.

Riku remembers playing with the shadow people, heartless corrected Ansem sometime later. They would take him for rides atop palm trees and rooftops, play pretend when Sora and Kairi were immobile, and even showed him a neat trick that allowed him to travel through inanimate objects shadows.

So it came to no surprise to Riku’s subconscious that he chose darkness over a measly keyblade that night on Destiny Islands.
