He was finished, now.
So it came to this; undone between this world and the next, with his eggshell-empty self burning away to blackest mist and a dark ash-haze dimming the fires of his eyes.
But there was no regret now, no.
Because now -- as the flame burned low and the endless darkness loomed -- the gnawing hollow hunger faded to nothingness, the empty void down deep inside him no longer keened for his stolen heart.
Heartless, he had placed his soul's own flame in the hands of his most precious thing; and now, at the end, it was worth it.
He would fade away; but heart-whole, in the end --
Faith had done what the hollow king could not --
