No Such Thing
Sora lay sprawled out on Riku’s bed on his stomach, kicking the pillow with his heels. Riku sat on the floor with his back against the bed reading a comic book.
“So, what do you want for Christmas?” Sora asked.
“I don’t know,” Riku said, flipping a page. “You got something in mind?”
“Oh, I want a skateboard,” Sora said, “and a new bicycle and a set of drums.”
Riku turned his head and raised a pale eyebrow.
“Wow, that’s a lot of stuff.”
“I know,” Sora tapped on the bed frame with two fingers, mimicking drumsticks. His drum solo meandered onto Riku’s left shoulder and from there to the top of his head. Riku grabbed Sora’s hands and interrupted the best part.
“Do you think I’ll get it?” Riku shrugged and released Sora’s wrists.
“Hopefully not the drums, you’ll keep the whole town awake at night with that racket.”
“Hey, I could be an amazing drum player. I could be the best!” Sora sat up on the bed and punched his fists in the air, “only I don’t know if I’ve been good enough this year.”
“What do you mean?” Riku flopped down on the bed beside him, comic book in hand. Sora frowned and scratched his head.
“Well, I dunno if Santa Claus . . .”
“Wait a minute,” Riku started laughing. “Sora, don’t tell me you still believe in Santa Claus.”
“What?” Sora looked puzzled. Riku sighed deeply and shook his head.
“Sora, you don’t get any gifts from Santa Claus, you really get all of them from your parents. There’s no such thing as Santa Claus. It’s all just a story, a lie, something they tell us to keep us out of trouble.” Riku opened his eyes wide and put his hands to his cheeks in mock horror. “If you aren’t good, wittle Sora-kins, Santa won’t bring you any presents.” He pinched Sora’s cheeks, “just a lump of coal.” He slumped down on the bed with his legs hanging off in an attitude of counterfeit despair.
“But, but, but, what about the sleigh bells I hear on Christmas Eve?” Sora asked, “or the milk and cookies I leave out, or, or . . .”
“All your parents,” Riku said mildly, glancing over at Sora whose shoulders were slumped. “Hey,” he grabbed Sora’s shoulders. “Don’t take it so hard, kid. You still get presents, don’t you? And cookies and egg nog and candy canes.”
Sora’s lower lip quivered suspiciously, “but now it’s not the same!” he protested.
“Aw come on,” Riku said, shaking him a little, "at least now you won’t have to feel guilty when Santa Claus doesn’t bring you a drum set. I know your Mom will never agree with that.” Sora smiled ruefully.
“Yeah just like the pet iguana I asked for last year,” he grinned. “Well, I guess you’re right. I guess I don’t believe in Santa Claus.” Sora sighed deeply. Riku crossed his arms determinedly and grinned.
“Maybe you and I can save our allowances up for some drums,” Riku suggested. “If nothing else, I’ll get a laugh out of the look on Kairi’s face when you try to sing her a love song accompanied by banging and thumping.”
“Shut up, Kairi’s just a friend,” Sora punched Riku in the arm, but he seemed oblivious. He just leaned back on the bed with his arms behind his head and laughed, “whatever, kid, whatever,” he said.
Notes: When I saw the little scene in Christmas Town/ Halloween Town where Santa tells Sora to say hello to the boy who told him that Santa wasn't real 7 years ago - I simply had to write a little something, even if it was a silly little something.
