Title: Choose Your Own Adventure
Word Count: 612
Notes: Spoilers for KH1. Setting… well, that’s part of the fun, now isn’t it?
He is small, sitting in the attic with old and dusty books that used to belong to his father. Sora kneels in front of the bookshelf and runs a tiny finger over spines cracked by age and having been read over and over again.
He can read the titles, and is very proud of himself. After a moment of intense and powerful indecision, he pulls a thick volume from the shelf.
‘Choose your own adventure.’
He smiles and opens the book.
You are a boy named Sora.
He squirms and grins in excitement.
He is a boy named Sora!
You find yourself in a strange, dark place, standing on a floor of stained glass.
There are three stone pedestals in front of you. One has a sword. One has a magic wand. One has a shield. A strange voice asks you to choose.
If you take the Sword, turn to page 2.
If you take the Magic Wand, turn to page 3.
If you take the Shield, turn to page 4.
Sora turns to page two.
You have taken the sword. The strange voice tells you, you must give up something in return.
If you give up the Magic Wand, turn to page 5.
If you give up the Shield, turn to page 6.
Sora continues to turn pages- reading and choosing to fight the strange inky dark enemies that popped up out of the shadows. Eventually he wins-
You wake up on the beach of the Play Island. You are building a raft with your best friends, Riku and Kairi. Kairi tells you to get a move on and collect food for the journey.
If you choose to look for Food, turn to page 24.
If you choose to lie down and take a nap, turn to page 37.
Sora snickers and turns to page 37.
Kairi finds you. She splashes you with cold water to wake you up. You decide to go look for food.
If you choose to look for Mushrooms, turn to page 26.
If you choose to look for a Seagull Egg, turn to page 27.
If you choose to look-
Sora, snickering, continues to turn the pages and collects every bit of food.
The story continues into nighttime and becomes more frightening. He shivers, but he continues to read. He can almost see it happening- like pictures in his mind.
You find Riku. He stretches out his hand to you. Darkness is climbing up his legs, and yours, pulling you both down.
You reach for Riku’s hand.
If you can’t reach him, turn to page 43.
If you take his hand, turn to page 78.
Sora’s hand hovers over the page. If Riku needed help, Sora would help him… no matter what.
He turns to page 78.
A black box takes up the entire page. In its center, the letters bold, stark white, is written-
THE END
Sora blinks.
“What?”
The box flares- stealing his sight- then rapidly shuffles through pictures, so fast it almost seems like they’re moving.
Maleficent- Ansem- Riku, devoured by darkness- himself powerless to stop it, pulled in so he wouldn’t leave Riku alone- world after world destroyed- Kairi’s lifeless body- armies of Heartless surging over places he knew- friends turned into heartless that he and Riku commanded- battles- keyblades cracked and broken- darkness- darkness-
Donald jerked awake at Sora’s scream and twisted in his covers- looking for the source of the attack. Goofy flinched and rolled off his bed with a startled cry.
When he couldn’t find one- Donald looked at Sora; wide eyed and staring at nothing.
“Are you okay?”
Sora gulped, wouldn’t look at him.
“…I took his hand.”
