syvia here, this is placed under the prompt of Care and Feeding. For the idea itself I was inspired by the comedian Dane Cook.
It was possible to choke on coffee, Even found out. The thought of a thing happening caused the scientist to inhale the hot beverage into his sinus cavity when Dilan told him.
"If you don't believe me, you can see it for yourself. The little thing is chattering up a storm and doing..." Dilan searched for the right word. "Monkey things."
Even hurried down the halls. Sounds that disturbingly sounded like a monkey came drifting ahead, Kairi's voice rose in excitement. When Even entered the room, he did both a double-take and a shudder. Braig was explaining the points of having a monkey to Kairi, who had the little creature in question curled around her shoulders. It chittered as it saw Even. The man thought it narrowed its eyes for a moment, gauging him, looking for a weakness, before going back to grooming Kairi.
"Why did you get a monkey?"
Braig grinned at Even, with hands on his hips and looking pleased. "Cuz I always wanted one. It's amazing, isn't it? Look at this cute little face and say "No, I don't want a monkey", Even. Dare you."
"I don't want a monkey, Braig." Even's face was composed as the beginnings of stress rolled through him.
"Well tough, you didn't buy him. He's going to make an amazing pet." Braig patted the monkey's head.
Pointing an accusing finger at the furry animal, Even bit out, "That is a horrible idea, Braig and you should take it back right now. You do not want a monkey as a pet. What's worse is that you never consulted us on this rash purchase."
"Says you. What're you all of the sudden, the local monkey expect? Does this resentment have something to do with a bad monkey incident as a child?"
Even drew himself up to his full height and proceeded to break down the finer points of exotic animal ownership. "Maybe I should explain a few things about monkeys before you jump to your conclusions, Braig. Firstly, it's not all bananas and toothbrushes as you see in films. Monkeys throw their feces around in a festive manner, as if it's something to be happy about."
"I like the monkey," Kairi giggled when it found her locket, quizzically inspected it. "I can learn to take care of it, Even. She's behaving herself, too."
"It's not a quiet monkey. This thing will grow and," Even winced as the monkey leap onto the ceiling lamp, swinging back and forth, chattering and screeching. "Just what possessed you to by a monkey, Braig?"
"I wanted to get a monkey. She looked awful lonely in that cage of hers, so I'd thought I'd give her a new and welcomin' home."
"That's not all," Kairi gushed, excitement in her eyes. "Braig wants to dress her in armour and give her a sword."
Braig nodded. "Hell yeah. Have fights with the little chimp around the castle when I've got downtime from work."
Everyone gave Braig that look. Kairi held out her arms for the monkey to come back to her. It did, sending the chandelier whirling and indenting itself in the far wall with an audible thump.
"Excuse me?" Even felt his left eye twitch.
"How pumped would any of you guys be going to or from work in the palace and knowing there might be a monkey around the corner that you'd have to battle with?" Braig mimicked a battle with his hands. "That's awesome when you think of it."
A long silence followed, broken by Even. "And are you going to teach this monkey to talk as well, Braig?"
"If I can, then that'll make this purchase even better. Thanks for the idea, Even." The monkey screeched, coiling its small body, pushing away from Kairi and launching itself at Even. The scientist turned and ran -- no, he had walked quickly -- from the little monster.
When the issue was brought up to Ansem, the king informed Even that the monkey could stay, if only for the purpose of keeping everyone on their toes and to stimulate mental alertness. Even thought it was an excuse for Kairi to find a helper in stapling her assignments together.
No matter what, Even was never "psyched" about walking down the halls. He hated living in fear of a three foot tall terror that brandished the butter knife it had been given.

Date: 2007-04-18 03:53 am (UTC)Hilariously cute and awesome. I'm lucky no one is around me when I laughed out loud while reading. I'm in love with Braig now.
"Hell yeah. Have fights with the little chimp around the castle when I've got downtime from work." --> This is win.
