Challenge: [ 138: Under-appreciated Characters ]
Title: Mothers and Sons
Word Count: 328
Notes: Doesn't actually work with the ending for KH2 so. JUST PRETEND OKAY.
“Thanks for your help,” Sora says, hands behind his head and knee bent, one foot behind the other. Goofy and Donald nod and echo the sentiments. Timothy Q. Mouse bows in response, taking his hat off and spinning it once before holding it over his chest.
“No problem, Sora. Dumbo an’ I are happy to help out,” he says, his strange accent thicker than a sponge full of water, and tosses his hat back on his head. Dumbo uses his trunk to lift the mouse by the tail, moving him from the ground to the cuff of his hat.
“Anything I can do in return?” The brunet asks.
“Well ain’t ya’ gonna walk us home? It’s only good manners to.” Timothy grins. Sora grins back, and Donald and Goofy exchange amused glances.
“Sure thing. But then I gotta head home. I bet my mom is worried; I‘ve been gone... A real long time.”
So he walks them to the tents. Inside, a much, much larger elephant immediately scoops Dumbo up in her trunk, rocking him back and forth. He flaps his ears to relieve her of some of the weight, and Timothy scurries up her trunk to sit on her head instead.
“Thank you,” she says sincerely. Dumbo lets out something between a hiccup and giggle. His mother’s eyes return to him, and she adds, “I’ve been wondering what adventures my Jumbo Jr. has been off having.”
Timothy, Sora, Donald and Goofy all stare with slightly confused expressions. “Jumbo Jr?”
“Well yes,” a curious look, “that Dumbo business was just a cruel nickname from the other girls.”
“Sorry little guy,” Timothy says, awkwardly. The young pachyderm smiles at him brightly.
“Yeah, sorry Du--er. Jumbo Jr,” Sora says, scratching his cheek. “I’ll be sure to call you that now.” The boy pauses for a moment, and glances around; his eyes rest on the elephants for a long moment. He smiles. “I should head home and see my mom. She remembers my name now, too.”
