Title: Hold the Cards
Word Count: 356
His hands occupied with shuffling the deck of cards, his motions almost like a reaction, done just as so many times before, until it became something automatic, fluid save for the occasional card that found its way to the table before him. (nine-of-diamonds) "So, what appears to be the problem?" (eight-of-clubs)
"We have an urgent... need of your abilities, Number Ten," Saix replied tersely.
"Oh?" Luxord looked up, his curiosity perked. (nine-of-clubs) "Whatever for?"
VII only growled something incomprehensible, flitting golden eyes betraying his disquietude.
He continued to shuffle (eight-of-spades), the soft trill of the cards pervading the silence. (nine-of-spades) Luxord peered closely, an eyebrow raised in amusement. "I see..."
"Stop fooling around with those accursed things. This is serious!"
The shuffling paused briefly. "Do not discern in such haste, Number Seven," he warned in a low voice, though he supposed it was only to be expected as this concerned his area of expertise. (two-of-hearts king-of-hearts seven-of-hearts five-of-hearts jack-of-hearts) Only he could comprehend such complexities of the wonders he worked, such concepts the others could not even dream to fathom in all their nonexistence. Fragile thing anyone could mangle but only he could amend.
"It would appear that VIII and IX have been up to no good of late, though I must admit this may be the most fatuous yet." After all, this was not the first, nor would it be the last, that his services are necessitated under dire circumstances. Of course, he had foreseen it long ahead of time.
The cards pretty much said it all.
"But you don't understand! Who knows what other calamity they could have caused by now."
He stopped shuffling, gloved hand poised gently above the top card of the deck. "I imagine so," he sighed, tossing the card to Saix, who caught it in surprise. (ace-of-spades)
"Xemnas could be returning at any moment!" Saix snapped, throwing the card onto the table next to the others. "We're out of time--"
"On the contrary, my dear Diviner," Luxord chuckled, rising from his seat. His eyes closed as he felt the familiar tug at his sleeves, briefly wondering whether he should have had some business cards printed up after all. "We have all the time in the world."
