Title: Stories in the Library
Word count: 160
Rating: G
“Tell me a story,” she says. They’re surrounded by stories in the library, of course, but a lot of those are heavy and anyway she likes the way her Grandma tells them better.
“What do good girls say?” Grandma chides her, but she’s already reaching out to pull Kairi onto her lap.
“Please,” Kairi says, wriggling to get comfortable.
Grandma puts her arms around Kairi. “All right, then. Which story would you like to hear today?”
“The one about the children,” Kairi says, curling up as close as she can. “Please.”
It scared her the first time, to think that everything could vanish from sight, but she can’t imagine it ever happening while she’s in Grandma’s arms. Grandma’s too solid and real to disappear like that, she thinks firmly. It’s safe to imagine herself there, joining the others to call the light back from where it’d been swallowed up, with Grandma’s arms around her. She won’t let go so easily.
