Hey guys, not really new here (on-and-off lurker, posted some stuff waaaayyyy back when) but I guess I should reintroduce myself anyway, so here I am. It's nice to kinda-sorta informally meet you all! Haha. :P Anyway, I come bearing ridiculous, super long so not really? drabble. :)

Challenge: 177 [Pretty Lies]
Title: Futures
Word Count: 653 (sorry! I really, really tried to shorten it as much as possible, but if it's too long you can take it down and I will absolutely understand)
Notes: Riku, pre-KH1, no spoilers... because I miss me some old school stuff.

Riku often tosses in his sleep. He's a restless dreamer, preoccupied with questions and tales of far off lands and thoughts about the future that almost seem taboo. There has to be more, he thinks. I want to know what else is out there. The door from the Secret Place is there, huge and ornate in his subconscious. A voice in the back of his mind tries to reason with him- it's dangerous, who knows what's behind there?; another one promises that all of his wildest dreams can come true.

He wakes up just as he's about to open it. Lying in bed with his sheets tangled around him, Riku breathes hard, in and out- recalls how the wooden surface, so real, had felt cool and smooth against his palm. He stares up at the ceiling for a while. Minutes pass. He is unable to fall back asleep.

-

It doesn't take him long to make it into town. Once there, he is easily able to find the place that he is looking for. He has to knock for a long time before anybody answers, but finally the door opens just a crack and a woman peers out at him from inside the shack.

Her tone is mildly exasperated when she first speaks. "Come back tomorrow," she tells him, and she is about to close the door when Riku stops her.

"Wait," he says, "please. I need to know my future."

The woman hesitates for a moment before pursing her lips, and studies the boy intently as she opens the door a little wider. Her eyes bore into him, and Riku can faintly make out the strange translucence of them in the darkness. "Very well," she finally says after considering for a bit longer. She steps back to allow him access and Riku makes his way into the tiny hut.

"Sit," she tells him, and, when he looks around for a chair and doesn't find one, she motions toward the floor. A little embarrassed, Riku situates himself on top of the wooden planks beneath them as the woman lights a candle from the other side of the room. She carries it back over to him, the fire illuminating her features in a way that unnerves him more than he would care to admit.

She takes a seat in front of him. "You are young," she notes, putting the candle down and taking his hand in hers. Her fingers trail over it- the smooth, pale skin of the back with the veins visible beneath it; the strong, tapered digits; the callous-marred palm. She does this for a while, eventually closing her eyes as she traces his hand with hers.

When she reopens them, it takes her a moment to speak, and her gaze shifts back to his face as she does so. "Be careful, boy," she finally tells him. "Your intentions are good, but there is fear. Jealousy."

At that, Riku tenses. Defensively, he pulls his hand away. "I'm not afraid," he lies, and when the memory of Sora and Kairi sitting on the dock alone together surfaces, he shoves it aside.

"Too much curiosity," she continues, "is not a good thing. Selfishness may cost you a great deal."

The accusation-of-sorts causes Riku to become upset. "I don't want to hear any more," he says angrily, forgetting to ask about the Door. "Thanks anyway."

The fortune teller doesn't try to stop him when he stands to leave. Instead, she remains seated as he makes his way over to the entry- her voice calls out to his retreating form: "The road is hard, ahead. Do not let these things get the best of you."

He tries to convince himself that she's making things up, and, ignoring the chill that creeps into him, steps out into the night.

I like this, because it just seems like it could have/ should have happened in the canon. & it wouldn't have helped Riku in the least, because fortune tellers rarely do.

I really, really like this.

Ooh. There's something about this that just seems so real. A fortune teller living in a mysterious shack has a very Destiny-Islands-feel to it. I loved it! :D

(ha, I like you already! xD)

since your drabble is overlength, it won't be included in this week's contest. :/ it can stay posted with no problem, though~

This? This makes me wish we could play the first game from Riku's side of the story. :D
