Riku has been here long enough to recognize when Maleficent is weakened. She is a powerful woman and has provided him with a comfortable bed and a library full of dreams. He ignores her for the most part, because when he is in Hollow Bastion and not out tormenting Sora -- "I thought you liked games?" -- she is usually busy, and he doesn't care to be part of whatever she's getting into.
He attends the meetings because he has to. Maleficent's allies can hardly be called friends -- they bicker amongst themselves, beat each other up, and it's not uncommon for him to squash a bug or two as it crawls past him, escaped from Oogie's burlap skin -- but he goes because he does not want to be in the dark about anything. He remembers the last days on the island -- "Let's take the raft and go, Sora! Just the two of us." -- and he recognizes not wanting to be left out anymore, even if it means he has to cart Kairi's unconscious body to many unfamiliar worlds and he has to clash with his former best friend at every turn.
It is after one of these meetings and he is wandering around the halls by himself that he catches her. She retires to her room quickly sometimes, and it is those times he knows her power has waned almost completely.
He slips into her chamber, unnoticed. Maleficent is at the vanity, but she is not focused on her reflection in the cracked mirror - instead, her focus is on her exposed back. The headdress is on the table before her, and black hair that would usually be hidden by it cascades down her back in a dark sheet.
She pushes that hair back, and aquamarine eyes narrow a little as he catches sight of her back, sickly-green like her face. They are translucent, webbed with a membrane that looks almost wet. They are beautiful, but they are destroyed, torn and crippled beyond repair.
To destroy a fairy's wings is the utmost of sins, and he wonders what about the darkness could have been so enticing to her so she would ruin herself so much.
He is thinking about it hard, and as he thinks, her eyes flicker up to meet his in the mirror. Long fingers curl around the shaft of her scepter and she fires a bolt of what might be lightning but what also might be nightmare at him. Riku's out of the room before it hits the wall in a cloud of granite dust.
Riku runs without thinking about it, sneakers slapping the floor, but he knows her secret now. They must be painful, those broken wings, and the pain must come and go, but hiding them under a mile of dark cloth doesn't erase the memory he now holds carefully, like a bomb he can't diffuse. He'll keep the memory safe, bury it until he needs it. For now, he'll run away, and he'll probably get beaten for it later, but it's worth it.
He knows of her destruction.
