Challenge [208]: Doors
Title: Alternatives
Word Count: 404
Notes: Haven't posted anything in forever, but this idea wouldn't leave me alone. Apologies to those who aren't familiar with Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, as this probably won't make much sense.
This world was unlike any of the others he'd been to. There were no Heartless - Maleficent had told him that they wouldn’t do him any good here anyway – but somehow it still felt... wrong. That was the only word Riku could think to describe it. Everything about it was off, almost as if the entire world was just out of phase with reality. From the way she had explained it, perhaps that wasn’t too far from the truth. The place was a maze of dank alleys and winding sewers, and the people were utterly bizarre, dressed in all manner of outdated and ragged clothing. Some of them were intimidating, even though he stared them down just the same, but others were just pathetic. If this was what happened to you when you fell through the cracks, Riku decided he never wanted to fall this far.
Maleficent had given him vague instructions on where he needed to go, but he had quickly discovered that getting there wasn’t as easy as she’d made it sound. Apparently, this Floating Market or whatever it was never stayed in the same place, and since he had no idea where he was going, Riku was eventually forced to tag along behind a group of rather unpleasant looking characters. He was pretty certain that the bridge he'd had to cross would stay with him in his nightmares for years.
Now he was in the midst of what appeared to be a huge department store, with stalls and heaps of useless items strewn haphazardly about over perfume and jewelry counters. The press of people was definitely inhibiting, considering his height, but after a fair amount of buffeting from the crowd he managed to find a booth that looked promising. The sign boasted "BIRDS AND INFORMATION" and the old man wore a coat that was shedding feathers as he moved about, enthusiastically advertising his wares. Behind him, caged birds let out an occasional noise of disapproval.
Riku knew what he was supposed to do. There was no harm in having an alternative, Maleficent had said. He wasn’t sure he believed everything she had told him about this family and what they could do, but if it was possible that it would help Kairi sooner... Once he had caught the old man's eye, he stepped forward before he could continue his sales pitch, effectively cutting him off.
"I’m looking for a girl named Door."
