Axel wakes up too late.
He knows so because he wakes up to nothing but lukewarm sheets and the dying memories of passion, but a bastard like this one is good at leaving him with nothing.
Axel, on the other hand, is good at never giving up. So the minute he rolls over and his eyes widen enough to be the hurt kid’s instead of the sardonic adult's, he vaults out of the cocoon and into the cold that hits him like he just peeled off his own skin. Clothes don't exist--boxers will do, and bare feet hit the wooden floor like gongs. He's too late.
Which is why he stops at the living room, mouth open and hand frozen around the doorjamb as if to keep himself from going farther.
Xemnas is waiting.
Persimmon eyes already locked on Axel's a heartbeat before they arrive, like a lion catching sight of its prey and dooming it to flinch back, Xemnas is waiting.
He's already dressed and his entire demeanor exudes a challenge, because he rightly expects one from Axel. But his eyes are already full of words he doesn't have to say. They've had this argument again and again, and repeating it won't change the outcome. Last night was a mistake. It won't happen again. My heart is not here with you.
Everything Axel had been about to say is gone, as if wiped from his mind entirely. He can fight with Roxas for hours and scream at Xion at the top of his lungs, but Xemnas can defeat him with just one look. Xemnas's eyes say no in a way that Roxas's turned back and Xion's bitten lip can't, because Xemnas's eyes say no forever.
The door clicks.
Axel sags against the doorjamb. "Careful. 'S cold out."
A shiver goes through him as the door closes behind Xemnas, and he isn't sure why he said anything. It's much colder on the inside than out there.
