"And where would we be now, without our hearts then?" he murmured, so softly that Xaldin could almost believe he had imagined it -- almost, if not for the fact that those were words he would never have allowed out of his mouth.
Not too far off, a tower of fire exploded into the sky. The flames casted shadows all around them and in the light, Luxord's expression was strange; the bitter curve of lips, the pained draw of his brow, the regret set in his jaw -- all of these were descriptions too alien to associate with the gambler. Yet there they were, lying stark naked for the world to see.
Xaldin wasn't sure what to think of this, this moment of truths. Old suspicions itched at the back of his mind and his eyes were already scanning for deception, his throat ready to snarl at every shadow, every doubt.
But Luxord wasn't lying; of that much he was certain. So instead of the bile accumulating in his mouth, Xaldin said, "I don't know. Somehwere else, probably."
"Ah," Luxord said, words still only a distant echo of the showman's confidence he had always exuded before today, "and that's where you're right. Without our hearts all those years ago, we wouldn't be here." Reaching into the pocket of his coat, Luxord withdrew his hand, fingering one gold coin. It glinted in the light and Xaldin found himself entranced, unable to look away.
"Because without our hearts, you would never have been Dilan, and I," he said, eyes glowing red as he flipped the coin into the raging flames, "would never have been me."
