Challenge: [242] Disguise
Word count: 598
Notes: Easy target makes for dumb jokes, but I took it anyway. It's been far too long since I've posted anything here. Hopefully I can get back in the habit.
Axel leaned down. Peeked around the corner. The sandlot appeared deserted. Silent. “This has gotta be the place, but I don’t see any Heartless.”
Roxas peeked as well. His spikey hair brushed Axel’s chin. “Maybe it moved somewhere else?”
“I don’t know.” Xion crouched in front of Roxas and looked around. “Saix was really specific this morning.”
The totem pole of Organization members pulled back. Axel looked over his charges and shrugged. “Nothing to it. We’ll take a quick look around, see if it’s still here, and if—”
A girl’s voice interrupted from the far end of the sandlot. “Fuu, stop following me. Go find your own spot.”
“Assignment.”
“I know that. Doesn’t mean you have to draw the same thing I am.”
“Copycat.”
“You’re the copyc—” The first girl paused. Axel sensed the frustration in her voice. “Fine.”
Roxas tugged Axel’s sleeve. “What’s going on?”
Axel looked around the corner again. Two girls, one with messy, brown hair and another with her hair hiding one eye had sat down on a bench. Each was holding a sketch pad and pencil. “Looks like we’ve got company.”
Xion looked again. “So what do we do?”
Axel leaned against the wall. Crossed his arms in thought. “How to distract those two? Hmm. Oh, wait. I know. You two wait here. I’ll be right back.”
Ten minutes later, Axel returned with a small bag in hand. “Okay, we’re all set. Roxas, you and I’ll disguise ourselves and distract the girls. Xion, you look for the Heartless.”
Roxas eyed the bag. “What kind of disguise?”
“Relax, I know all about girls their age.” He pulled a jar out of the sack. “Spread some of this on your face.”
Roxas took the jar and read the label. “Glitter face paint? How’s this—?”
“And put these fake fangs in your mouth.”
“But, why?”
“Like I said, I know all about girls their age. If there’s one thing that they love, it’s sparkly vampires.”
Xion blinked. Cocked her head. “We do?”
Roxas looked even more confused. “Axel, I have another question.”
“Speak up, Roxas. What is it?”
“What’s a vampire?”
“Oh. Right. Never told you about those.” Axel shrugged. “Change of plan. I’ll keep the girls distracted, and you two search for the Heartless.”
Five minutes later…
“Hewwo, wadiesh.”
The girls looked up from their sketch books. Axel grinned. Ran his tongue along the plastic fangs in his mouth.
The brunette’s gaze was awed. Confused. “Can we, can we help you?”
The other girl glared with her one eye. She remained silent.
Axel struck a manly pose, hands to his womanly hips. “Awed ba ma wooksh?”
The brunette slipped her sketchbook into her school bag. “Sir, I think your fangs are loose. And your face is melting.”
Axel maintained his smile even as he could feel the cheap, ten munny face paint run down his brow. Bit down on the fangs to secure them. “Why, thank you. Tell me, do you two come here often?”
The girls looked at each other. Brunette picked up her bag and stood up. “You know what, Fuu? Take this spot. Be my guest.”
Fuu followed the first girl’s lead and packed her own sketchbook away. Glared at Axel. “Dork.”
Axel watched as the girls dashed off. Heard the brunette complain about black-robed perverts. Spat out his fangs. “Now who could she be talking about?”
Xion walked up beside him. “We couldn’t find any Heartless.” She stopped. “Are you sure girls like sparkly vampires? Because—”
“Shush now.” Axel turned and marched away. “Ice cream’s on me.”
