Title: There Are No Heartless in Atlantica
Challenge: #260, music
Rating: G
Word Count: 599
Spoilers: Nope
Notes: Because music has not always been a good thing in Kingdom Hearts...
This is set in the sequel-setting from a previous drabble, so this Roxas is Sora's son, not his Nobody.
Roxas stared. “You want me to what.”
“Sing!” Queen Ariel spun around, almost singing herself. “For my daughter’s birthday party. Melody’s been so bored, lately, wanting to see new things. This will be perfect for her!”
“A strange kid with a sword shows up at your castle, and you want…” Roxas cut off when he saw Max frantically waving his hands, signaling him to shut up. “…” Roxas said instead. “… I don’t know how to sing.”
“I do!” Huey and Max said together.
“I’m in a band back home,” Max explained.
“We are a band!” Huey shot back, waving at his brothers.
“Oh, good!” Queen Ariel gushed. “You can all play together!”
Roxas was completely lost. He’d thought he had this arriving-on-a-new-world thing down to a routine. Basically, he showed up, found either the prettiest girl or the guy in the most complicated clothes, said hi, and let them talk. Then he stuck a keyblade into whatever bad guy was giving them trouble and blasted off. Sometimes there was a clue to chase about his dad or the real Roxas, but that was pretty much it. Except here…
“Oh, it’s all right, Roxas,” Queen Ariel said. “If you’re not a musician, that just means you’ll be free for the dancing!”
“…dancing?” Oh, no. Oh nononono…
“Well, Melody’s only twelve, it’s certainly too early for her to come out.” Roxas’ eyes crossed. That phrase couldn’t mean what it meant back home, right? “But, it’s a birthday party with music. Of course we need dancing!” Roxas was about to say that he didn’t know how to dance, either, when the queen grinned and said, “And if there’s dancing, we need a handsome young gentleman to dance with the princess.” Roxas’s ears went from zero to red hot in two seconds. “Oh, please say you’ll come!”
Max was giving Roxas a double thumbs-up from behind her back. “I… ooookay…”
“Wonderful. I have to tell Eric, he’ll be so pleased!” The queen swept out of the room, still bubbling.
Roxas rubbed a hand through his hair. “What just happened?”
“You just got asked out on a date!” Max said. “I mean, you got asked by the girl’s mom, and that’s kinda lame, but still. Score!” He saw Roxas’ face. “Don’t worry, man, if you don’t know how to dance, I can teach you!” Huey was tugging on his sleeve. “Okay, fine,” Max said to him, “we’ll switch off. You can be lead guitar on half the songs.”
“Who says they’ll even have your instruments?” Roxas griped. Huey just grinned and waved his staff. It changed shape in a flash of red sparks. “You have a guitar spell.” Roxas shook his head. “This is insane. What kind of world is this?”
“A normal one,” Louie said.
“What?”
“We can’t be fighting all the time,” Dewey put in.
Sure they could. Land, find the heartless, come up with a plan, wait for it to go wrong, win anyway, take off. Find the next world and do it again. Nothing in there required Roxas to know how to talk to girls at parties. “I can’t even tell her where I’m from.”
The ducks had lots of ideas.“Talk about sailing, or swimming, like those stories you keep telling us.”
“Yeah! They’ve got lots of ocean here.”
“You’ll have something in common!”
Max put an arm around Roxas’ shoulders. “C’mon, relax. You’ll do fine!” He would not. It was going to be a disaster. “Look at it this way. This is one world where we can be glad our dads aren’t here. Can you imagine them singing?”
