Spoilers: Major SPOILERS for Birth By Sleep
Characters: Ven.
Summary: A beginning before anyone knew there was to be an ending.
Ven had no brothers or sisters, and the house where he and his aunt lived was far from town, but though he was often alone, he was never lonely. He made a playmate of his shadow, and it went along with him on all his adventures, climbing trees and chasing frogs and falling in creeks right by his side. The shadow was his best friend, and if he developed a habit of blaming fits of temper or broken crockery on “the other little boy”, his aunt found no harm in a little imagination.
The last piece of Ven with ears to hear or eyes to see watched the shadow-boy come into existence and heard the old man say, “To you the name Vanitas shall be given.” And a part of him objected: he knew that shadow and the name that belonged to it, and that name wasn’t Vanitas, it was-
The name slipped away with the rest of him.
(Ven was lonely, sometimes, in the Land of Departure.)
