Title: No Regrets

It wasn’t odd that Sora and Riku spent time together. It was the same when they had been kids. Even after their adventures, which had thoroughly tested their friendship, somehow, by the end of it all, they were as inseparable as ever. What was odd, however, was the fact that Riku had asked Sora to meet him at the beach. Alone. He’d explicitly told Sora not to tell Kairi about it. Sora had come, wondering the why in all of this.
They stood together, side by side, facing the beach. Then, when the timing was right, with the sun falling into the horizon, Riku confessed, “I like you.”
The words were softly spoken and simple. All Sora could do was stare at him. In his mind, Riku had always liked Kairi. He didn’t expect this. The silence stretched on. Sora was frozen.
Riku sighed and shook his head. “Did you hear what I just said?”
Sora opened his mouth and still, he said nothing.
Another quiet sigh and to make things more complicated, Riku stepped closer to him. Sora couldn’t find the will to move. Riku wrapped one arm around his waist and pulled him even closer. Again, nothing. Sora didn’t know what to think about this. Riku cupped his chin and kissed him on the lips.
Just like that, with three little words and a kiss, Riku broke the last barrier between them.
Finally, Sora made up his mind. He kissed Riku back, clumsily, of course. But as they pulled away, Riku was smiling softly, fondly at him. It was such a rare, truly genuine sight. It warmed Sora’s heart.
That was when Sora knew for sure that he would have no regrets about this, even as he thought about Kairi, the image of her, so vivid in his mind.
In the end, she never had his heart.
