Title: Keepsake
Challenge: Hidden
Count: 255
Notes: Fairly self-explanatory.
Once, Kairi had another necklace.
She wore it every day. A pale pink stone set in silver, on a thin silver chain. It was always there, bouncing against the neck of her shirt, glinting in the sun. It was pretty, he recalls, and it was special to her. It was special to him.
When Kairi came to him, sobbing and worried over the necklace, he comforted her. It was a bitter comfort - only because he knew the only reason she had run to him was because Sora wasn’t around that day. But it was a caring comfort, because he really did feel sorry for her.
But it was an odd sort of sorry, as the necklace itself was hidden in his pocket, carefully placed there for safekeeping. As feather-light as it was, he could feel it weighing on his conscious like a heavy stone. But he didn’t say anything, but he didn’t offer it back.
He just consoled her for her loss, promising, maybe, that it would turn up again. He could tell she didn’t believe it, but she smiled through her tears anyway.
Keeping a friend’s precious keepsake might seem cruel, he figures. But he doesn’t see it like that. He sees it as his memory of her, something to remind himself of her as she is, as he likes her, but also sees it as him keeping it safe for her.
One day, maybe he’ll give it back to her, and nothing will be hidden anymore. She’ll have her necklace, she’ll have his honesty.
Maybe, just maybe.
