Theme: Disney Song
Title: Reflection
Word count: 635
Pairing: ...Larxene/Naminé? ...XD Ehehe.

A little long, but... Nyuu.

She once believed that if she tried hard enough, she could change her physical appearance. With makeup, accessories, and various varieties of fashion at her fingertips, this seemed possible.

The gnarled ends of blonde hair that caught in the brush as she guided it through morning after morning?
Gone.
The colorless face that was looked upon as being ghostly, but never ‘fair’?
Gone.
Replaced by chemicals.
Replaced by artificial skin toner.

Look at me...

She once believed that if she tried hard enough, she could turn her body into a canvas. Everything could be reconstructed; everything could be altered and made perfect. With her pencil and her paper she would sketch out the blueprints and trace over the imperfections, working them into beauty. Within the paint she dipped the brush, stroking blue, red, yellow, and green over her skin.

Gone was the colorless flesh.

I will never pass for a perfect bride...
Or a perfect daughter.

By looking at photos and looking at her face in the mirror, she could see the physical differences. One year she was shabby, the next she was pristine. She was the picture of perfection. She was the role-model, the ideal.

By flipping through the pages of her sketchbook, she realized that nothing was different.

And by watching the pages burn, one by one, she was convinced they would go away.

Can it be...
I'm not meant to play this part?

The thoughts still remained. She surrounded herself with other gods and goddesses like her, but she was Satan. She would corrupt them, she was sure. They were blinded by their admiration and adoration, two words so closely linked and two links so closely related that they were often confused. And yet she knew the difference.

Admiration? She admired those girls with their boyfriends and their dates and their valentines.

Adoration? She adored the girls with the multi-colored badges and the lingering, meaningful glances.

And she hated it.

Who is that girl I see
Staring straight
Back at me?

She became someone she didn’t know, a puppet gone haywire, controlled by no one and nothing. The graphite dragged across the paper in jagged lines and sharp bends and curves, wicked arcs streaming across sheet after sheet of paper, gouging deep into its surface. Impossible to erase. Those were the kind of marks that made her the happiest, for those were the kind of marks that wouldn’t change.

Ever.

Why is my reflection someone
I don't know?

Her blueprints were no longer that of her. They were of someone. Not just someone. She told herself they were boundaries. ‘Do not go here.’ ‘Do not become this.’ Yet she looked at the drawings and the familiar evil she came to accept sprung to life within her and set it all on fire again.

And with the curling iron in one hand, she looked in the mirror. All she could smell was burning, burning, burning. And somehow she came to accept it.

Somehow I cannot hide...
Who I am... though I've tried...

“Hey Naminé!”
“Hello...”
“Uh... You okay?”
“Me? Um... Yeah, I’m alright...”
“Good. So anyway... You’re not doing anything this Saturday, are you?”
“...No, I don’t think so.”
“Great! Now you are! I’ll pick you up at seven, okay?”
“...O-kaaay...?”

When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?

Larxene smiled. It was a rare smile... Not mocking, not jeering. Not a sneer. It was true.

“Naminé... You don’t have to change anymore. Just stay you, alright?”

Changing a look towards the mirror, Naminé gave a small nod.

She saw a girl. Blonde, pale, skinny. She saw her seated next to another girl, blonde, pale, skinny. She saw their differences and she saw their similarities.

When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?

And for once, she liked what she saw.

Lyrics are from Mulan, of course. Yay!

I like your AUs so much because they seems so real and different from their original counterparts, and yet I can still see their counterparts' ghosts in them. Namine's loneliness is accurately portrayed here, and I actually feel something else rather than dislike for her (never liked Namine for the sole fact that she keeps screaming MARY SUE at me in CoM...-_____-;;)

I love Larxene's personality in here so much. It's just so her. <3 <3 <3

Another rambling comment from teh DC

Should I be reading this, seeing as I don't *have* CoM yet? XD

Anyway, so I can't say much on characterization, of course, other than that your characterization of Larxene (ugh. I shall always call her Laxchine, I know it) is a lot like my RP characterization (http://www.livejournal.com/community/mugenjou_high) of her. ^^ Whee.

Overall, good piece. ^_^ I agree with fire_bringer.

(And I will not say anything about pairingage... I will not... oh hell, axel/laxchine otp. =D)

I <3 the last line especially. And Reflection is one of my favorite songs, so that's a definite bonus--that you chose it makes me feel very warm and cuddly inside. I don't like Namine, but... this definitely warmed my picture of her.

XD I'm not saying anyone has to write it, I just had to comment on the Laxchine/Namine.
*shrug* What can I say... I blame RPs.

Arg, makes me wish I'd played CoM so I could have some idea what the original character is like. >_< [I am so deprived. ;_;] Still, it was a very interesting drabble, if on the long side. I think you could've cut it down and still maintained the heart of it. Stll, what you have going is very powerful. The image of someone almost compulsive is really interesting to read, especially with the passing of time. Nice incorperation of the song, too.

WOW. This drabble was really unexpected, and I have to say I'm REALLY impressed, Ori! I love that Mulan song, so that's a bonus -- and though I don't particularly like Larxene or Namine, I really sympathized with Namine in this drabble. I know exactly how she feels in this situation, and it's very touching... I especially loved the part about her sketching, the details you put into it -- the kind of details that only an artist would know. ^_^ I love drawing. Also, the end is perfect, really! That last line is very moving, especially after that drabble. The lyrics really fit the situation, too, so nice choice. My favorite line, though, is "She saw a girl. Blonde, pale, skinny. She saw her seated next to another girl, blonde, pale, skinny. She saw their differences and she saw their similarities." because it really opened up my eyes to the characters. I hadn't really noticed their similarities before. ^_^ Love it~!

Wow, that's really interesting! I love the story and the idea--I'm always able to identify with Naminé.

I'm collecting fan fiction for my pending Naminé shrine. Would you like to be posted on my website? ^_^;

Thanks so much! I can't find a shrine either. There is a fanlisting... Somewhere.. For her though.

Thanks again! ^.^
