Challenge: [o59] Laughter
Title: Ringing
Word Count: 145
Spoilers: None, I'm pretty sure. Post CoM, pre-KHII Kairi-ness.

Notes: This is a bit experimental. I've been toying with formatting and grammar usage in my writing, lately. Don't worry, nothing too egregious. All bits of fudged grammar here are, I assure you, stylistic choices.

It's missing.

It's like a buzzing in her ears, a ring she can't get rid of. She shakes her head, brushes her hair behind her ears, and cocks her head, listening.

But always there's nothing. There's never anything except the ringing.

When she stops, Selphie asks her what's wrong, in that bubbly, sunny Selphie way. Kairi just grins and trots on down the path to school, pretending like nothing's wrong. Nothing is wrong, after all. She's only imagining it.

But somehow, it's always with her. Ringing in her mind and in her heart, and no matter what she does, she can't get rid of it.

For how can you get rid of something you no longer have?

That sound. That bright, cheerful sound, that resonates forth like life from the darkest parts of her memory. That soft sound of laughter; a boy's laughter.

Sora's laughter.

Why thank you! During the first KH, I didn't like Kairi at all, but my opinion has since completely changed, and there is a special place for her (and her breed of stubborn hope) in my heart.

So I'm just upping the Kairi love.

That's okay. You and just about everyone. I'm sure if I went back and played KH, I would rediscover my old hate.

Oh well. I shall soldier on in the name of The Girl Who Is Just A Tad Too Annoying For Everyone's Tastes!

Eh, Kairi has her 'Must slash Kairi NOW' moments as well as 'You rock lyk woa chica' moments. ^_^

I liked this piece. I would miss Sora's laughter too, even if I didn't know who he was. Or...something like that.

Oh, definitely. Sometimes that stubborn hope of hers is just .. well .. oh, did she drive me nuts in KH.

But I still admire her pluck!

Aww, that's cute. ^^ Very wistful and sad, yes.

And Kairi, well... I still can't make up my mind. Sometimes she irritates me to no end, but when you think about it she's just a girl hopelessly in love with Sora... and who can blame her for that? ^^;;;

Is it wistful..? I'll take your word on it, as I'm not sure what it's SUPPOSED to be, it just sort of happened. But to me it's a bit of hope. HER hope, that special sort of Kairi hope that simply cannot be doused by anyone or anything.

Okay, it's official that I'm totally alone in my Kairi love. Granted, all of my Kairi love comes from KHII alone and we don't even see her that much, but still.

Actually, I first found some Kairi love at the end of KHI... when she was walking through the cave on the islands and she saw the paopu drawing and was crying and such... it was sweet and I felt bad for her, and also that's when that hope of hers started to shine through.

To be honest, I think the single thing that annoys me most about her is the way she runs... she like, flounces. But that's not even her fault. ^^;;;

Like an itch that she can't scratch because it doesn't exist. I think 'ringing' is an excellent descriptor, and love the overall concept.

Exactly! She can't do anything with it because it doesn't technically exist.

Do you? I'm glad! I was thinking, what would it be like to hear a faint sound, very faint, in the back of your mind like that? And I decided it would be like that leftover ringing in your ears, from all that noise, and you can only hear it at night, when it's quiet..
