Title: Sea-Salt Ice Cream
Word Count: 511
Notes: Spoilers. Sora/Riku.
Sora watched as his best friend ran to get him some ice cream- sea-salt, new flavor- with a smile before replacing it with a thoughtful frown. For the past week, Riku had been acting strangely. Ever since they had gotten back to Destiny Islands, his silver-haired friend had been unnaturally kind to him. Offering to help at every chance, buying anything Sora wanted; Sora hadn't lifted a finger or wasted a munny yet, and it was starting to bug the brunette. Not that getting the chance to be lazy or actually having some munny in his pocket bothered Sora. No, it was that look Riku gave him when Sora agreed to let the older male help. That small, simple smile like when a parent gives their child a new toy.
"Or like a lover looks at their boyfriend," Kairi had said absentmindedly as she leaned against the Paopu tree. There were very few moments Sora got to be away from Riku, and, in one of those little minutes, he had talked to Kairi about his thoughts. Breaking his gaze from the setting sun, Sora turned to look at his female friend who returned his baffled stare with a light shrug and smile. "Well, you never know."
But Sora wanted to know! And badly too. After that adventure Sora undertook, Riku had no right to think he was still the dorky kid from yesteryear. So when Riku returned with two popsicles in his hands, Sora sat on one of the main island's town square bench, staring at the bubbling fountain before him as he thought of a way to word his question. He licked his ice cream in silence before turning to face Riku, who glanced shortly at him.
"...Yes?" the taller male asked after several seconds of silence. Sora let out a small sigh and turned away, gaze back on the water as he opened his mouth.
"I'm not a child, Riku," he said irritatedly, expecting Riku to explain his odd behavior. However, his eyes just widened as he heard Riku's response.
"I know." Sora spun his head in his friend's direction to see if the male was lying- Riku's eyes never lied- but the older teen was standing, tossing his popsicle stick into the nearest garbage can. The brunette sat, stunned, as Riku calmly walked back and outstretched a hand to Sora, wiping a sea-salt flavored smudge off the corner of Sora's mouth. Bringing his thumb up to his own, he licked it off before shoving his hands into his pockets, turning once more to leave for his house when he noticed the darkening sky.
"You had a bit of ice cream there," the silver-haired male explained as Sora shook out of his trance. "C'mon, or I'm going to leave without you," he called and Sora stood as well, finishing off the rest of his popsicle and throwing away the stick. He jogged to catch up to his friend before turning to stare at the older male. Riku turned his head slightly before smiling, the last few days suddenly clear to the brunette.
He grinned in response.
