"THEY’RE MIIIINE!!" The whiny cries of a five-year-old Sora were lost to the wind as he chased a seven-year-old Riku across the beach, attempting to retrieve a stolen shovel and bucket.
"They are not!" Riku replied stubbornly, easing outrunning the smaller boy, who eventually tripped and fell in the sand, tears welling up in the corners of his eyes.
"RIIIIIIIIIKUUUUU!!"
"Boys, play nice!" Kairi wandered towards the two boys, pulling the shovel and bucket out of Riku's hands and placing them in the sand behind her. "It doesn't matter who they belong to, as long as we all play nice. 'Kay?" The two boys nodded, their argument forgotten, and Sora sniffling quietly as he wiped his nose on his sleeve...
A solitary tear ran down Kairi's face as she surveyed the now desolate beaches of Destiny Island. When they were younger, she, Riku and Sora would always been down on the beach, building sandcastles or having mock wars. But now the beaches were silent; no more wars were fought, and no more castles were built.
As she walked along the sand, she noticed a shell half-buried in the wet ground. She picked it up and brushed away the excess sand, realising it was one of the shells she and the boys used to use to decorate their sandy kingdoms.
Placing the final shell in her sandcastle, Kairi called out to Riku and Sora, who had earlier gotten involved in a wooden sword war. "Come and look at the castle!"
Sora, distracted, looked towards Kairi for a moment, allowing Riku the time to tap him with the sword. Sora looked down at Riku's sword and huffed, trudging off towards Kairi and the castle.
"I like this one!" Sora exclaimed, pointing to the shell that Kairi had just used on the castle. "Oh!" He bent down and picked up another of the small shells, handing it to the girl. "You can use this one too!"
She smiled, placing the shell atop the highest column of the castle. "Thank you Sora."
Clutching the shell to her chest, Kairi walked away from the shoreline and towards her home, not realising how long she had been reminiscing. But, as night rolled in, and the tide dragged across the beach, she remembered one last thing...
"Sora! Kairi! Riku! Time to come in!" The three kids groaned as they picked up their assorted accessories and went back home, waving to each other as they went inside. Later, when night had fallen, Kairi looked out her window and watched the tide lapping at the sandcastle, knowing that in the morning, it would be gone.
That night, she had thought that the tide would only wash away the sandcastle. But, now that she had grown, she knew that the tide could not only wash away a castle, but two of her closest friends as well.
