Challenge: [073] The Sky's the Limit
Title: Dependence
Word count: 582
Spoilers: For KH2
Notes: During KH2, prologue. Naminé, ----, DiZ. So what happened to the three behind the scenes after Naminé’s exposition outburst on the 6th day?
One moment, they were in the Corridor, the next, DiZ was pulling her along the hallway of the real Twilight Town manor.
She fought him, throwing her weight against his arm, pushing with her other hand against his grip. Her past infractions had made her bold, and she followed through with that boldness now.
In the end, it didn't matter. DiZ dragged her through the corridor, into the library, and into the computer room- where Riku was waiting.
"He's fighting with Axel as we speak. Don't worry-" he said, anticipating their reactions, "he'll win."
DiZ moved forward, pulling her with him. He stepped into Riku's personal space and glared with his golden eye.
"I told you to take care of her."
"After you did, other things took precedence," the hooded man replied.
"I have no time for games, Ansem," he barked out the name. A cry tumbled out of her lips as DiZ flung her forward into Riku. "I must monitor Sora's reconstitution." Riku caught her gently, almost shielding her as DiZ continued to hiss at them. "This time, do as I say." With that, he stalked past them and sat at the computer.
Riku cupped a hand around her shoulder. "Come, Naminé."
If she’d failed in breaking away from DiZ, she had no chance against Riku. Besides- she hadn’t the- she bit her lip, trying not to laugh- heart to fight him. They walked back into the library, through the hall, and into her room.
If Riku thought she wasn’t worthy of existence, who was she to argue?
She’d kept her promise to Sora- her task was done now. Yet- and yet... she still felt that things weren’t done. She wanted- or... she didn’t- want to be done yet. She’d promised Roxas that they’d meet again- but if Riku decided to follow orders after all-
He let go of her and stepped back. Naminé turned around, looked up at him, waiting.
She saw him flinch- her calm expectation had hurt him once again, but although she knew Riku was a good person (in spite of everything), Naminé didn’t assume. She never assumed. She couldn’t. Assumption had caused the destruction of several Organization members- all more powerful Nobodies than she.
“Go,” said Riku.
She blinked.
“I’m not going to kill you. DiZ says you’ve outlived your usefulness- well, he’s right. He doesn’t need you- or me,” he added. “But,” his voice dropped to conspiratorial softness, “we don’t need him anymore either. So why should we do what he says?”
She blinked again, and smiled, as he’d meant her to. They’d depended on him- but now Sora would be fine, and Donald and Goofy with him. They didn’t need DiZ or his machines.
Riku was speaking again, “You’ve fulfilled your obligation to Sora. You’re free now.”
She blinked yet again. “I’m-”
“Free.” He nodded.
“I-I’ve never-” Freedom. She’d never imagined- hadn’t really thought about it. First she’d been subject to the whims of the Organization- then committed herself to fixing what she’d done to Sora- and helping to control Roxas, and helping Riku, and tiptoeing around DiZ.
“I’m going to look after Sora- help him when he needs it.” He took her hand in his. “But if you need me- you know how to find me. I’ll come.”
“I don’t know... Riku- I- what should I do?”
“Whatever you want.” He paused, and she could feel his smile. He pulled her close- trying to impart strength with his embrace. “The sky’s the limit.”

That's a really amazing image. Just -- Riku trying to let her go, and then that she does all that in the game after this and the 'I'll be looking after Sora' and, and, and, *incoherrant* ♥

Date: 2006-08-21 04:38 pm (UTC)I love to write about the guys who don't get enough screen time. ^^ It's fun to think 'while we were off watching Sora kick ass- THIS stuff was also happening'. ^^ I always love to write the scenes that had to have happened somehow, although we don't see them in the game.
Glad you liked it!

Date: 2006-08-21 04:48 pm (UTC)And I'm afraid you've gotten me rather addicted to Riku-Namine interactions
Whoops! >_> If you find other good ones out there, please let me know. ^^
I have to applaud Squeenix/Disney for giving us a scenario like this. I don't remember anything that comes remotely close to
"Now, things will be relatively quiet as the main character is in a coma for a year, and the victimized-person-who-caused-it-but-'loves'-him, the best-friend-who-betrayed-him-but-was-reedemed and a-strange-and-vengful-man-with-hidden-identity all work to fix him."
The fact that they don't actually show this stuff going on, essentially saying 'it's not interesting enough to show on screen' is like a BIIIG flag with the words 'fic oppertunities' waving at me.
Thanks again. ^^ Glad you liked it!

Date: 2006-08-23 03:54 am (UTC)I especially was happy about Riku's goodness levels here, because they made him look so evil in the beginning of kh2. D: I hated that one cutscene where he's tossing the munny bag so casually in his hand after stealing it from poor Roxas. >_O
And you characterize Namine really well too -- a mixture of defiance and timidity.

Date: 2006-08-24 08:30 pm (UTC)*laughs* XD Yes! They had me convinced that he was Ansem/Xehanort (sp?). ^^ They gave him such an amazing dynamic in the beginning though. You can see him being kind to Namine, even while he commands her at times. You can see him being sympathetic to Roxas' situation, and yet he's rough in shoving him around. *snerk* The 'Hey, you're that pickpocket!' scene cracks me up.
Riku: *headgrab- SHOVE*
Thank you! :D
