At the end of the year, Kairi raises her head to the cloudless blue sky.

"I wonder if she's waiting for them," Tidus muses, sprawled out on the warm dry sand.

Wakka looks up from where he had been helping little blue-gray crabs back into the calm sea and does not know.

Selphie asks her about it one time and Kairi visibly jumps as the voice sounds from behind her unsuspecting back.

"No," answers Kairi with a knowing smile, shaking her head slowly. "I know they'll come back, so I wouldn't look for them. I'm looking for snow." Her eyes dim. "Although it might not come to this place, with this sort of warm weather. It would be nice though."

Selphie presses her mouth into an uncomprehending line. "She said she was looking for 'snow'," she relays back to her friends, who tilt their heads and also make confused faces.

"Snow?" Wakka repeats, the word foreign and strange on his accented tongue.

"S'no?" Tidus echoes, scratching his head, "Is that a codename or something? What's that?"

"Beats me," Selphie says.

"Then how does Kairi know?"

Kairi knows because at the beginning of the year, she recognized the white, flaky substance on the road to Kingdom Hearts. She has also seen it before, in a faraway world in a faraway time, but the memory is fuzzy.

Selphie, Tidus, and Wakka fall into a familiar silence. This is something over their heads, they know. This is something they will never understand. They have grown accustomed to the feeling, first introduced to it when Kairi came back alone and wouldn't tell them why they felt like they had been sleeping for ages.

"Don't worry about it," Wakka says finally, with a cheerful smile. He places his broad hands on both of their heads and ruffles their hair. Selphie squirms away with a huff and raises her hand to smooth down her curls. Tidus really doesn't look much different either way. "It's not for us to know."

Tidus nods slowly, biting his lip.

Selphie looks over her shoulder at the quietly standing princess of heart and silently consents.
