Challenge: Winter
Title: Solstice
Word Count: 190
Notes: School was cancled because of snow and poor visibility. (And that's a lot of snow and wind here in Montana.) So I figured I'd write this. My first try and both a drabble and Kingdom Hearts work. Pre-KH
It’s easy to see why their ancestors had worshipped the sun during this week. The winter solstice. The only real proof of winter for Destiny Islands, which seemed to be perpetually caught in summer. These were the days where the days became shorter and shorter until today, the 21st, the shortest day of the year before they began to get longer once more. Funny to know that the people of ancient times believed that the sun was truly leaving. To most of the children on the island, it cut hours off of their playtime, but to one boy it was a welcome change. For Riku is was a blessed relief from bright sunlight to cool darkness. Darkness that seemed to be comforting only to this boy. It brought rest and relief, while bringing nightmares to another. The same dream of large yellow eyes, from calming to horrifying. But only in a few days the sun would return, and the light would shun Riku back into hiding under the tall palms. ‘Sad that it can’t always be dark here.’ He thinks bitterly as mother rubs the sunscreen into his pale cheeks.
