Challenge: [082] Crossroads
Title: For All of It
Word Count: 550
Spoilers: HUGE spoilers for... everything.
Comments: This is set way before the games, in the laboratory of the six apprentices (they need more face time, and here it is!)
“Well?”
They gaped at him as if the idea was completely absurd. As if they had all diverted their eyes when he had strapped himself to the table, taking every incision with stride if only to further their knowledge. This was the next step; they had unknowingly been working towards it for months.
Still, they stared. He grew anxious.
“We’ve followed you this far,” Even remarked. “But this may be asking too much.” No one moved to disagree.
“How so?”
“We could die, Xehanort!”
“Rather that than spend the rest of our days in this solitude! What are we but meager apprentices, toiling away and for what? No one will speak our names unless we move forward!”
“Up until now it was for knowledge. You have acquired a morbid fascination that puts us all in jeopardy,” Ienzo muttered, unabashed.
“Oh please,” Braig cut in rudely. “The way you stared at those specimens went way beyond a ‘search for knowledge’. All of us wanted it, I dare anyone to disagree.”
Silence, the uncomfortable shifting of white coats as they stood around a lab bench covered in papers. Their precious findings and the questions still unanswered were strewn before them in a mixture of pride and sacrifice.
“Still. This bold move may be slightly premature,” Elaeus said, arms crossed in front of his strong chest.
“I have thought it through, I would not prompt you into uncertainty,” their leader interrupted. “Just imagine the sorts of things we can accomplish when not being held back by trivial human emotions. Our research could far surpass anything anyone has ever attempted!”
“Foolish,” the youngest practically spat.
“Quiet, Ienzo. Do not forget your place,” Dilan quickly scolded. The boy on his right huffed, but spoke no further. “While I am inclined to agree with him, your idea entices me, Xehanort. We are already in up to our waists, it is too late to back out.”
“Precisely.”
“We’ve all sacrificed enough,” Even said bitterly.
“Do not think of it as a sacrifice. It is merely a method with which to gain our desired result,” Xehanort half-pleaded. “I am asking you brothers, the only family I can remember… I am asking you to follow me into greatness. If I am to find higher meaning, I want you all by my side.”
The remaining five scientists looked to one another, stirred by the other’s words. If they took this road, surely there was no turning back.
“I’m in,” Braig said, nodding towards Xehanort.
“And I,” Dilan remarked proudly.
“For science,” Even said.
“For each other,” Elaeus followed.
Ienzo looked at the men around him, all exceeding him by many years and much experience. These like-minded souls who had helped quench his thirst for knowledge, had held him in regard despite his age now asked him to enter into a pact that would bring them power. In a way, wasn’t this what he had always wanted?
“For all of it,” he finally said, eyes fierce.
Xehanort gazed at his comrades, the adrenaline of excitement causing his heart rate to increase exponentially. It thudded powerfully in his chest, perhaps aware it was soon to be freed. He unrolled a large parchment onto the lab bench, and the other five bowed over it curiously.
“Alright. This is how we’ll do it…”
