Challenge: [088] Tomorrow
Title: Falling Into Day
Word Count: 475
Notes: I live! And write oddly philosophical Marluxia/Larxene. Exciting.

Fates can be changed in a day. Marluxia knew it instinctively, had understood it even before he’d woken up one day Aralimu and gone to sleep something entirely different. A being with ambition could take advantage of these patterns. In one such span he’d lost everything, and now, fallen, he rose. Could he not rise still higher?

He walks down from Xemnas’s office thoughtfully to where Larxene waits for him in the garden. They sit in neutral silence for a moment, sipping on their drinks, before they both jump in at once. “So, what -” “I have a proposition -”

They stop; she measures him with her eyes and smiles slowly, teeth glittering. “Well? Go on,” she says.

Within an hour of receiving his orders he is at his new domain to assess its potential. Its capabilities could and would be used for more than research. Between the place and the witch, the memories of even the strongest could be altered; fate and foolishness had handed him his chance.

“You think they’re not watching us?” she asks him. “You’re damned cocky for the Nobody on everyone’s list.” She’s not even pretending much concern – invested as she is, it would still amuse her to see him fail.

“Of course they are, but they still think my ambition a controllable commodity,” he tells her. “Sora alone is our trump card, nothing that I’ve contrived, and none of them know it. At the moment I'm untouchable. So stay in the game long enough to see the fun, won’t you?”

She considers and leans a little closer, a calculated movement. “I might at that.”

He would not be hasty. He would wait for the opportune moment to appear to him. His day would come, following its siblings in service unavoidably into place, and he would take command of the Organization with the inevitability of a flower opening to the sun. The waste and stupidity of the current leadership would be swept away, the moon of Kingdom Hearts would brighten into dawn, and their days would be their own. To plan, to research, to find the real answers at last.

After all this time he’s still surprised by that edge to her somnolence. There’s an impression of contained energy to her, even in rest; one understands that she could snap from sleepy satiation to deadly purpose without notice. He traces the healing lines of scar tissue down his torso and wonders if that should make the conquest more satisfying. Soon, he vows, he will feel it firsthand.

And perhaps on some distant tomorrow, dusk would submit to day at last and all of them would wake up made anew.

She laughs when he tells her. “Don’t count on a new day,” she mocks him. “The sun doesn’t rise in Never Was.”

Fate wasn’t kind to Aralimu. Marluxia will make his own luck.

This was really great, and you're right about the philosophy part. This is a new part of Marluxia I hadn't considered before.

I especially like this line:

She laughs when he tells her. “Don’t count on a new day,” she tells him. “The sun doesn’t rise in Never Was.”

That is SO Larxene.

Marluxia/Larxene, when well written, makes me so happy. This drabble is so interesting, too. I love it, good job!

Mm. Had to give this piece a second read before I made a judgment on it. I really like your style here. It's...dark, quiet. You write Marluxia well, and I love his interactions with Larxene. Smooth. Sexy. Calculated. Just the way I see him. I love the last two lines. Very final sounding--though I would have preferred something a bit more ominous, a bit of dramatic irony maybe?--but really, a nice, strong end. Lovely.
